Visualization of Maitreya. The Buddha Of The Future

Maitreya and the Timeless Journey: A Dharamshala Reflection

Sitting at dusk in Dharamshala’s high hills, I sip butter tea while Himalayan prayer flags flutter outside my window. Wearing my PhD student hat, studying non-duality in this Tibetan Buddhist enclave, I am daily immersed in traditions that teach time itself is fluid. In the Abhidharma writings I read, time “changes from moment to moment” and is not an absolute container. Each interval is an imputed phenomenon on the mind’s continuum. In practice, this means past, present, and future are inseparable; by examining each breath, I see the seeds of all lifetimes. In a previous essay, Embracing a Timeless Perspective: The Path of Self-Inquiry, I explored how transcending linear time can heal our soul lessons. Here in the Dharma community of Dharamshala — under snow-capped peaks and beside old gompas — those themes come alive.

Maitreya: The Future Buddha of Loving-Kindness

The figure of Maitreya is woven through Buddhist lore in every tradition. He is the great Bodhisattva who will become the next Buddha of our world. Classics like the Lotus Sutra and Pali Suttas foretell his coming at a time when the Dharma has faded; indeed, the Buddha taught that Maitreya will “descend to earth to preach anew the Dharma” when Gautama’s teachings have completely decayed. This prophesied return underscores the impermanence (anicca) even of sacred teachings. Tibetan Buddhists call him Pakpa Jampa, the “Noble Loving One,” reflecting his embodiment of maitrī (Pali metta)—loving-friendliness. The very root of his name comes from Sanskrit for “friendship” or “loving-kindness”. In this way Maitreya personifies the Buddha’s metta, the altruistic love every practitioner seeks to cultivate.

All schools of Buddhism revere Maitreya: from the earliest Mahayana sutras to the Theravāda canon. He was “mentioned in scriptures from the 3rd century CE” and became the only bodhisattva generally honored by Theravada tradition. In Tibetan monasteries and pilgrimage sites (even here in the Tibetan diaspora), statues or thangkas of Maitreya remind devotees of hope. Monks and laypeople celebrate Maitreya Day on Losar (Tibetan New Year), symbolically aligning a new year with the advent of compassion. I have watched local prayer wheels inscribed not just with Om Mani Padme Hum but blessings for the “future Buddha, Maitreya,” linking everyday practice to this future promise.

Modern teachers reinforce this symbolism. Lama Zopa Rinpoche writes that “Maitreya Buddha is the embodiment of each buddha’s loving kindness, and the symbol of all the bodhisattvas’ loving kindness for all sentient beings”. In other words, Maitreya is not only an external savior but an emblem of the love and peace we cultivate here and now. Each act of compassion is a tiny way that the Buddha of the future already comes alive in us.

Impermanence and the Circular Wheel of Time

In Vajrayana and all Buddhist thought, time is cyclical and impermanent. Walking through Dharamshala’s market or monastery, I see this everywhere: the melting winter snow, the ever-changing faces of pilgrims, even the way buildings rise and crumble. As the Dhammapada teaches, “All conditioned things are impermanent” — a truth that turning our attention to impermanence can free us from clinging. This is not mere pessimism; it is healing. Recognizing change with wisdom lets us let go of past suffering and open to transformation.

Buddhism frames life itself as samsara, a vast cycle of becoming. The classical doctrine of rebirth describes how our actions carry on beyond death: “the actions of a sentient being lead to a new existence after death, in an endless cycle called samsara”. This cycle, the Buddha warned, is full of unsatisfactoriness (dukkha), and it only ends in Nirvana (liberation) when desire is extinguished. In practical terms, my hope for healing is to transform the karmic threads that tie me from one life to the next. Each lifetime is like a ring on the wheel of time, connected to the others by cause and effect. In fact, Abhidharma psychology teaches that a period of time is measured on a person’s mindstream between two events (for example, between committing a karmic act and experiencing its result). Time has “no beginning and no end,” because our mental continuum flows beyond any single life. In this light, the cycles of samsara are not abstract: they are lived in every heartbeat and choice.

Culturally, Tibetans have long conveyed this cyclical view. The Kalachakra (“wheel of time”) teachings portray cosmic ages of deterioration and renewal. Even celebrations align with cosmic cycles — for instance, the Tibetan New Year ritual Losar connects rebirth of the year with hopes for Dharma’s rebirth. Living here, I feel that each prayer wheel spin and meditation retreat is a tiny turning of the wheel of time toward awakening. Thus the prophecy that Maitreya will come “during an era of decline” reminds us that just as eras cyclically decay, they also cyclically revive. And the revival begins within each practitioner.

Non-Dual Awareness: Beyond Past and Future

Studying non-duality has taught me that the ordinary split between past/future and present is a convenience of the mind. As one Tibetan text explains, time is not an absolute background — it is relative to the observer. In other words, time is “a function of, and therefore relative to, the mind that experiences it”. This insight dissolves the ego’s grip on time. When I meditate on “the future Buddha,” I find that the image dances on the edge of awareness: Maitreya resides not ‘out there’ in a remote future, but here in the spacious clarity of the mind.

Buddhist emptiness doctrine reinforces this: there is no independent “flow” of time apart from moment-to-moment consciousness. The Tibetan non-dual tradition (Mahamudra/Dzogchen) would say that our true nature is timeless awareness itself. In that pure mind, distinctions between past and future collapse. From this perspective, the promise of Maitreya’s coming can be read as poetic: the Buddhahood we seek is unborn and already present. Each realization — each glimpse of bodhichitta — is Maitreya awakening within us. This feels especially vivid at this altitude: the blue sky seems to hold all past and future in a single point of now.

Karma and the Continuum of Lifetimes

The doctrine of karma ties these ideas together. Every intentional action leaves an imprint across the vast mental continuum. The Abhidharma notes that we can specify a temporal interval between a harmful act and the suffering it yields. These karmic sequences often play out over many lifetimes. In Buddhist lore, Maitreya himself is said to have practiced boundless compassion eons ago, patiently awaiting this cycle’s fruition. In our practice, we too accumulate wisdom and compassion seed by seed. Sometimes I imagine my own past lives: what traumas or achievements might have been carried forward? Whether these memories are literal or symbolic, they serve the same purpose — showing that time’s span is not limited to “this life.”

Scriptures say we can be reborn in any of the six realms depending on karma. Personally, I take this as a mirror: if I find myself suffering now, it may be the fruit of unskillful actions from before. Conversely, a sudden influx of insight might feel like seeds planted long ago finally blooming. Understanding karma in this way makes time a dimension of healing: we see how to respond to difficulties (as ripenings) and nurture wholesome seeds (to bloom in future). This is the integration of soul lessons across lives that my earlier article envisioned.

In Tibetan Buddhist practice here, we often chant mantras and engage in lojong (mind-training) to purify karma and cultivate wisdom. Each practice is an anchor in the present that gradually alters the entire timeline of mind. Just as a great tree might first have been a seed buried in soil, our current life is the continuation of countless past “moments.” Every act of generosity or patience has ripple effects, even into the unseen chapters of the soul’s story.

The Maitreya Within: Inner Awakening of Timeless Wisdom

Ultimately, reflecting on Maitreya has become less about waiting for a distant savior and more about recognizing a personal truth: the future Buddha is the Buddha happening now. Every loving thought and action I offer feels like a tiny manifestation of Maitreya’s compassion. When I study Vajrayana art or witness puja (worship) in the Tsuglagkhang Temple nearby, Maitreya sometimes appears side by side with Avalokiteśvara and Manjushri. This reminds me that compassion and wisdom are inseparable — the two wings of the dove that will carry the Dharma forward.

In academic terms, one might say Maitreya is an archetype of metta, or loving-kindness, that matures within the pilgrim’s heart. Lama Zopa’s words resonate: global and personal peace “comes from the good heart, loving kindness,” and Maitreya is the symbol of this universal heart. In practicums, I have chanted Om Maitre Ma — a mantra of friendship and benevolence — watching the syllables soften my agitation. Each time, I glimpse how Maitreya’s arrival is a metaphor for the blossoming of such open-hearted presence in ordinary life.

As spring returns and prayer flags anew unfurl on the hilltops, I feel I carry Maitreya’s promise with me. It is not a future unreachable by linear time, but a living impulse toward awakening. Just as a snowmelt feeds the spring, each moment of insight feeds the coming of true Dharma anew. In the great circle of samsara, there is no line dividing now from then — the healer and the healed, the questioner and the answer, are one flow.

Cultivating the Future Now

  • Impermanence: The Buddha’s words ring true every morning here: seeing that “all conditioned things are impermanent,” we learn to release our clinging. Rather than fear time’s passage, we welcome it as the path to wisdom.

  • Karma and Continuity: We embody the law of cause and effect, aware that our current struggles and joys are interwoven with past actions. This makes life a sacred continuum in which every moment can seed a better future.

  • Non-dual Wisdom: In the heart of practice, we realize that time itself is a concept — the mind’s way of organizing experience. Beyond beginnings and ends lies the timeless ground of being, the awakened nature where Maitreya already dwells.

  • Loving-Kindness: Finally, we remember that at the core of every teaching is compassion. By developing a good heart, we manifest the very future we yearn for. As Lama Zopa Rinpoche said, Maitreya symbolizes “the loving kindness for all sentient beings,” which we actualize here and now.

In the blend of scholarly insight and poetic reflection that guides my journey, I find Maitreya’s message is simple: the future of the Dharma depends on the wisdom that arises in each person today. His awaited arrival is both a vision and a mirror, showing us that the luminous wisdom of Buddha is timelessly present in every open heart. As the Tibetan mystic Padmasambhava taught, an enlightened mind is never bound by time. So as I write these words by the glow of a butter lamp, I know that the “Future Buddha” is really the present moment’s kindness, patience, and insight unfolding within me.

Welcome to this gratitude meditation ritual. Find a quiet, comfortable place to sit or lie down, close your eyes gently, and take a deep breath in. Exhale slowly, letting go of any tension in your body. Take another deep breath in, and exhale, letting yourself sink into relaxation. One more time, take a deep breath in, feel the air filling your lungs, nourishing you. Exhale completely. As you breathe naturally, allow your awareness to settle into this moment. Notice the sensations in your body, the rhythm of your breath, the stillness around you. Now, imagine a soft, warm light above you. This light represents gratitude, a radiant energy of appreciation and abundance. Feel this light gently pouring over you, beginning at the crown of your head. It flows down, soothing your forehead, your cheeks, your neck, and your shoulders, washing away any tension or stress. Feel it moving into your heart, expanding and filling your chest with warmth and joy. You are deeply relaxed, open, and ready to experience the immense power of gratitude. Imagine yourself standing at the top of a peaceful staircase. With each step, you move deeper into a state of gratitude and connection. Step 10, feel yourself becoming lighter. Step 9, your mind quiets, opening to the present moment. Step 8, deeper and deeper into relaxation. Step 7, peace and calm surround you. Step 6, your heart opens further to gratitude. Step 5, halfway down, you feel completely safe. Step 4, a sense of appreciation begins to flow within you. Nearly at the bottom now. Deeper still, embraced by gratitude. Step onto soft, warm ground and rest here in this beautiful space. In this space, begin to bring to mind something you feel grateful for. It could be a person, a moment, or even something as simple as the breath in your lungs. Feel this gratitude in your heart, warm and expansive, growing brighter with every breath. Now, think of another thing to be grateful for, perhaps something you often overlook. A kind word from someone, the beauty of nature, or even the lessons life has given you. Let the gratitude flow into your heart, filling it with light and joy. Next, bring to mind a challenge or difficulty in your life. Shift your perspective and see if you can find something to appreciate within it. A lesson learned, strength gained, or a new direction revealed. Feel gratitude even for the struggles that have shaped who you are. Silently say, thank you, thank you, thank you. Feel how gratitude transforms everything it touches. It connects you to abundance, love, and the infinite possibilities of life. Repeat silently, thank you, thank you, thank you. Now, imagine this gratitude as a radiant golden light within you. Your gratitude touches everyone and everything, creating waves of joy and harmony. Take a moment to rest in this infinite field of gratitude, connected to all of life. It's time to return, bringing this deep sense of gratitude back with you into your day. Begin to notice the sensations in your body. Wiggle your fingers and toes gently. Feel the surface beneath you, grounding and supporting you. Take a deep breath in and exhale. Slowly open your eyes, returning fully to the present moment. Welcome back to your fantastic and cosmic world. A world filled with gratitude, abundance, and infinite possibilities. The Transformative Power of Forgiveness: A Ritual for Healing

Smedes, and the timeless wisdom that forgiveness doesn’t change the past but reshapes the future, this ritual invites you to embark on a profound journey within. Through this sacred practice, you’ll discover that forgiveness is not about condoning harm or forgetting, but about reclaiming your freedom and light. “To forgive is to set a prisoner free and discover that the prisoner was you.” Join me in this empowering episode as we explore the art of forgiveness as a path to liberation, inner peace, and a brighter tomorrow. Welcome to this forgiveness ritual. Sit comfortably, close your eyes, and take a deep breath in. Exhale and take another deep breath in. Exhale. One more time, take a deep breath in, relax, and exhale. Keep your eyes closed and bring to mind someone you need to forgive. It could even be yourself. Allow any emotions to arise under sadness, frustration. Notice them without judgment, simply observe. Now, imagine this person sitting across from you. In your mind, speak to them honestly. Express your feelings. Tell them what you felt and what you wish they had known. Now pause. Imagine this person responding. Perhaps they apologize, explain their pain, or sit silently, radiating compassion. Now again, in your mind, speak to them honestly. Express your feelings. Tell them what you felt and what you wish they had known. Now, pause again. Imagine this person responding. Perhaps they apologize, explain their pain, or sit silently, radiating compassion. Now, visualize yourself holding a heavy stone in your hands. This stone represents your pain. Look at it closely. Thank it for the lessons it brought to your life. Now, gently place it down. You no longer need to carry this weight. Say silently, I release you. I release myself. I am free. I release you. I release myself. I am free. I release you. I release myself. I am free. Take a deep breath in. Exhale. Take another deep breath in. Exhale. One more time. Take a deep breath in. Relax and exhale. Feel the sensation of forgiveness washing over you in this moment. Embrace it. Sense it. Let it fill you with peace and love and compassion. When you're ready, gently open your eyes. Welcome back to your fantastic and cosmic world. Welcome back to a world of forgiveness and love.

Your power of Manifestation by the Ocean (Hypnotic Session)

The Power of Manifestation: Harnessing the Universal Laws of Unlimited Potentialities

Manifestation is the art of bringing our deepest desires and aspirations into reality. It's a concept that transcends mere wishful thinking, tapping into the foundational principles of the universe itself. Central to this practice is the universal law of unlimited potentialities, which posits that the universe holds infinite possibilities for us all. By understanding and leveraging this law along with other relevant universal principles, individuals can unlock the true power of manifestation to shape their lives.

Understanding the Universal Law of Unlimited Potentialities

The universal law of unlimited potentialities suggests that at any moment, there are limitless paths and outcomes available to us. This law implies that the constraints we perceive are often self-imposed by our beliefs, fears, or societal conditioning. To harness this law, one must first believe in the abundance and limitless nature of the universe. Recognizing that potential is boundless opens the mind to receiving what it truly desires without the limitations of scarcity or competition.

Complementary Laws of Manifestation

Several other universal laws work in tandem with the law of unlimited potentialities to facilitate manifestation. Here are a few key principles:

The Law of Attraction: Arguably the most famous among manifestation laws, it states that like attracts like. By focusing our thoughts and energies on desired outcomes, we attract those very possibilities into our lives. It’s essential to maintain a positive and hopeful outlook, aligning our vibrations with what we seek.

The Law of Action: Manifestation isn't solely about wishful thinking or positive affirmations. It requires actionable steps towards the desired outcome. This law emphasizes that actions must align with thoughts and feelings to actualize dreams. It bridges the gap between the mental and physical realms.

The Law of Correspondence: This principle asserts that the patterns of the macrocosm are reflected in the microcosm. By understanding this correlation, individuals can influence their personal environment and experiences through their thoughts and actions, which in turn resonate with the universe’s larger patterns.

The Law of Perpetual Transmutation of Energy: This law highlights that energy is always in motion and can be transformed from one form to another. Positive energy can thus be channeled into manifesting positive outcomes, continually evolving from lower to higher vibrations.

Practical Steps for Manifestation

To effectively utilize these laws, one must adopt a proactive approach to manifestation:

Set Clear Intentions: Know exactly what you want to manifest. Clarity is crucial in harnessing the law of attraction effectively.

Maintain High Vibrations: Keep your energy and spirits high. Engage in activities that uplift your mood and keep negative thoughts at bay.

Visualize Success: Regular visualization strengthens the reality of your desires in your subconscious, aligning your mental and emotional frequencies with your goals.

Take Inspired Action: Be ready to take steps that feel right and are aligned with your goals. Action is a critical component of manifestation, as it actualizes thoughts into reality.

Practice Gratitude: Gratitude amplifies positive energy and opens you up to receive more from the universe. It acknowledges the abundance that is already present and forthcoming.

Manifest

The power of manifestation lies in understanding and aligning with the universal laws that govern reality. By recognizing the limitless potentialities available to us, and actively engaging with these principles through positive thought, visualization, and action, individuals can shape their destinies. Manifestation is not just about achieving what you desire; it's a transformative journey that reflects your inner self and your deepest values in the world around you. Through this practice, not only can one fulfill personal aspirations, but also contribute positively to the collective human experience.

Welcome to this very special moment. A moment of connection with your higher self, with the source of your fundamental peace, with love, with abundance, with harmony and balance. Welcome to your reality. Now, close your eyes, and with your eyes closed, gently roll your eyes up into your forehead and imagine a little window where the curtains are pulled closed. As you open the curtains, you can imagine looking out through that window and into the night sky. There you will find a large full moon. Now, imagine gazing up into that space in your forehead and continue to stare at that large silver-gray bright moon. Now, take a big breath in, fill your lungs, and as you exhale, repeat in your mind, Relax. Good. Now, take another big breath in, focus on that moon, and now, as you exhale, repeat in your mind, Relax. One more time now. Take another big breath in, fill your lungs completely, and now, as you exhale, think to yourself, Relax. Good. Now you can breathe normally. I am going to count backwards from 5 down to 1, and when I get to the number 1, your inner gaze will relax and you will completely let go. Number 5. Focus all of your attention on that bright full moon. Number 4. Keep staring at that moon as if nothing else matters. Number 3. Staying right here, now, in the present moment. Keep gently rolling your eyes up and keep gazing at that moon. Now, on number 2, take a big breath in and fill your lungs again. Now, on number 1, let your inner gaze relax. Let your eyelids be comfortably closed and just let go completely. In a moment, I am going to count from 10 down to 1, and with each descending number that I count, allow yourself to enter into deeper and deeper levels of relaxation. 10. Going deeper. Deeper and deeper relax. 9. Drifting down, down, down. 8. Deeper, deeper, deeper relax. 7. Down, down, down. 6. More relax, more relax, more relax. 5. Deeper, deeper, deeper. 4. Down, down, down. Just letting go. 3. Sleep, sleep, sleep. 2. Deeper relax, deeper relax, deeper relax. 1. Deeper, deeper, deeper. In a moment, I am going to say the word sealed, and when I do, your eyelids will become sealed down tightly closed. Sealed. Your eyelids are now locked down tightly closed. Your eyelids are now locked down tightly closed. Any effort to open your eyes causes them to lock down even tighter. Any effort to open your eyes causes them to lock down tight. You can try to open your eyes, but find them locking down even tighter. You can try to open your eyes, but find them locking down tight. When you are convinced that they are just not going to open, then nod your head yes. Good. Now stop trying and go even deeper. Take a deep breath in, and now let it out slowly. As you continue to breathe deeply and evenly, feel your body beginning to relax. With each breath, allow relaxation to spread from the top of your head down to your toes. Feel any tension melting away. Feel your muscles becoming loose and relaxed. Now, imagine yourself descending a staircase that leads to your personal haven, to your special place. With each step down, feel yourself going deeper into relaxation. 10. Going deeper. 9. More and more relaxed. 8. Let go completely. 7. Deeper still. 6. Halfway there. Completely safe. 5. More relaxed than ever. 4. Deeply calm. 3. Almost there. 2. Deeply relaxed. 1. Fully immersed in tranquility. Now that you are in this very relaxed state, imagine that you are in your special place. Live. Imagine. Think about it. Sense or feel. Create in your mind the experience of your special place. You know that special place by the blue ocean. Visualize the flat, transparent ocean stretching out before you, its surface smooth like glass. The sun is gentle and warm, the perfect temperature bathing your skin, neither too hot nor too cold. See what you see. The brilliant blues of the sky and water melding on the horizon. Soft white sands beneath your feet. Hear what you hear. The distant calls of dolphins as they playfully leap above the water's surface. The soft lapping of waves against the shore. Feel what you feel. A gentle breeze caresses your skin, bringing with it the fresh, salty scent of the sea. Maybe even smell what you smell. The clean, invigorating scent of ocean air, refreshing and along and coming. As you walk along the beach, notice a group of dolphins not far from the shore. They seem joyful and at ease, their graceful movements in tune with the rhythms of the sea. Each leap and splash sends ripples across the water's surface, captivating your attention and deepening your sense of connection with this place. Take a moment to enjoy this peaceful scene, letting it fill you with a deep sense of calm and contentment. Know that you can return to this special place in your mind whenever you need to relax or feel at peace. Every detail is here for you, vivid and clear, any time you wish to visit. Now that you are in this very relaxed state, your deep inner mind is now open and receptive to respond to powerful and positive suggestions, affirmations and images that easily and automatically become true for you now. Everything you are about to hear will become deeply embedded in your subconscious and conscious mind and become true for you. Realizing a World Free of Labels (Hypnotic Session)

Embracing Diversity: The World Happiness Foundation's Vision for a World Free of Labels

In a society that often prioritizes conformity, the World Happiness Foundation is championing a revolutionary approach: creating a world free of labels, especially focusing on communities that include neurodivergent individuals and those with autism. This initiative is not just about advocating for inclusion; it's about reshaping our understanding of neurodiversity and leveraging it as a strategic element in building a world of freedom, consciousness, and happiness for everyone.

Understanding Neurodiversity and Autism

Neurodiversity is a concept that refers to the variation in the human brain regarding sociability, learning, attention, mood, and other mental functions. It is a perspective that regards individuals with differences such as Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and other neurological conditions as part of normal variations in the human population.

Autism, a prominent example of neurodivergence, is often characterized by distinct social interactions, unique strengths, and varied ways of perceiving and interacting with the world. Rather than viewing autism as a deficit, the neurodiversity movement suggests that society should embrace these neurological differences in the same way we accept other forms of diversity.

A World Free of Labels

The World Happiness Foundation believes in a "world free of labels"—a society where people are not defined by their neurological conditions but are embraced for their unique contributions and perspectives. This vision aligns with the foundation's overarching goals of enhancing freedom, raising consciousness, and increasing happiness across the globe.

Seeing the World Through Their Lenses

One of the core initiatives of the World Happiness Foundation is to encourage society to view the world through the lenses of neurodivergent individuals. This perspective shift is vital for developing more comprehensive and humane approaches to education, employment, and social integration. By understanding how neurodivergent individuals perceive and interact with their environment, society can move beyond mere accommodation and towards genuine inclusion and appreciation of diverse cognitive landscapes.

Supporting Whole Communities

Achieving this vision requires a holistic approach that supports not only neurodivergent individuals but also their families, teachers, and caregivers. These support networks play crucial roles in the lives of neurodivergent people, and empowering them with knowledge, resources, and emotional support is key to fostering an inclusive community.

Educational programs tailored to recognize and utilize the unique learning styles of neurodivergent students, workplace policies that accommodate and celebrate different cognitive abilities, and community services that provide comprehensive support are all elements of this inclusive approach. These initiatives help dismantle the traditional narratives that often marginalize neurodivergent individuals and replace them with a new paradigm that recognizes the value and potential of every person.

Toward Fundamental Peace and Human Progress

If society were to embrace the perspectives of neurodivergent individuals fully, we would not only make strides in achieving fundamental peace but also unlock new paradigms for human progress. Neurodivergent individuals often offer unique insights and innovative solutions to complex problems, driven by their distinct ways of processing information and their heightened abilities in various areas such as pattern recognition, memory, or specialized skills.

By valuing these perspectives and integrating them into the broader societal framework, the World Happiness Foundation believes we can advance towards a future where neurodiversity is not just accepted but is acknowledged as a critical component of our collective human advancement.

Conclusion

The World Happiness Foundation's commitment to supporting a world free of labels is a bold step toward redefining societal norms and values. By fostering an environment that cherishes neurodiversity, we pave the way for a society that is not only more inclusive but also richer in understanding and innovation. Through this transformative approach, we can envision a future where every individual has the freedom to thrive, contribute, and shape a world of greater consciousness and happiness.

In a society that often prioritizes conformity, the World Happiness Foundation is championing a revolutionary approach, creating a world free of labels, especially focusing on communities that include neurodivergent individuals and those with autism. This initiative is not just about advocating for inclusion, it's about reshaping our understanding of neurodiversity and leveraging it as a strategic element in building a world of freedom, consciousness, and happiness for everyone. This hypnotic session is designed to reprogram our conditioning to paradigms that do not serve us any longer and opens the door to a world free of labels, of any and all labels. Welcome to a world without conditioning. Relax and enjoy. Welcome to this session. Sit comfortably and enjoy. Allow your eyes to open and place all of your attention on one spot upon the ceiling. Fixate all of your gaze at that one point as if nothing else matters. Now take a big breath in, fill your lungs, and as you exhale, repeat in your mind, relax. Good. Now take another big breath in, focus on that spot, and now as you exhale, repeat in your mind, relax. One more time now. Take another big breath in, fill your lungs completely, and now as you exhale, think to yourself, relax. Good. Now you can breathe normally. I am going to count backwards from five down to one, and when I get to the number one, your eyes will close down and you will completely let go, beginning the process of entering into deep hypnosis. Number five. Eyelids now beginning to get heavy, droopy, drowsy, and sleepy. Number four. Keep staring at that spot as if nothing else matters. Number three. Staying right here, now, in the present moment. Eyelids getting more and more heavy. Now on number two, take a big breath in and fill your lungs again. Now on number one, let your eyes close down and just let go completely. In a moment, I am going to bring you slightly out of the hypnotic state. Then, we will do another induction that will be even more powerful, which will cause you to go back even deeper into the hypnotic state. This is called deepening by re-induction, and it will cause you to go far deeper than you are right now. I will count from one to three, and when I get to three, you will open your eyes and we will do this even more powerful induction. One, two, three. Allow your eyes to open. Now close your eyes again, and with your eyes closed, gently roll your eyes up into your forehead and imagine a little window where the curtains are pulled closed. As you open the curtains, you can imagine looking out through that window and into the night sky. There you will find a large full moon. One more time now, take another big breath in, fill your lungs completely, and now as you exhale, think to yourself, relax. Good. Now you can breathe normally. I am going to count backwards from five down to one, and when I get to the number one, your inner gaze will relax and you will completely let go. Number five, focus all of your attention on that bright full moon. Number four, keep staring at that moon as if nothing else matters. Number three, staying right here, now, in the present moment. Eyelids getting more and more heavy. Now on number two, take a big breath in and fill your lungs again. Now on number one, let your inner gaze relax, let your eyelids be comfortably closed and just let go completely. Bring your attention to your eyelids, and as you do, you can feel them becoming very heavy. Imagine as if your eyelids are so heavy that they just will not work. Imagine as if those eyelids are so heavy it is as if they are sealed down tightly closed. Imagine that those eyelids are just so heavy that they simply will not work. Now I'd like you to pretend, just pretend, as if you try to open your eyelids and find that they just do not work. Good. When you find that they are so heavy that they just do not work, then stop trying and go deeper within. In just a moment, I am going to have you open and then close your eyes. When you do, this will be your signal to double your level of relaxation. When your eyes open and close, make your level of relaxation twice as deep. Now open your eyes briefly. Good. Close them back down and double your level of relaxation. Make it twice as deep. In just a moment, we are going to do that again. I will have you open and then close your eyes. And when this happens, remember, that is your signal to double your level of relaxation. Want this to happen and you can easily make it happen. Now allow your eyes to open again briefly and then close them back down and make this level of relaxation twice as deep. Now in just a moment, I will have you do that one last time. When I ask you to, then open and close your eyes and find how easy it is to double your level of relaxation even further. Remember, only you can do this. I cannot do it for you. Okay? Now once again, eyes open. Good. Now close them back down and double your level of relaxation, making it twice as deep. As you enter this deep state, I invite you to imagine yourself slowly stepping into a serene and magical forest. The path you walk is soft beneath your shoes, a mix of pine needles and lush moss that cushions your every step. As you walk deeper into the forest, the sounds of the outside world begin to fade, replaced by the gentle rustling of leaves and the distant call of a solitary bird. After a few moments, you come upon a beautiful clearing. The sunlight filters through the high branches in warm, dappled patterns, casting soft glows on the forest floor. The air here is fresh and sweet, filled with the scent of wildflowers and earth. In the center of the clearing is a small, tranquil pond, its surface smooth and mirror-like, reflecting the clear blue sky and the greenery that surrounds it. Near the edge of the pond, there is a perfectly placed bench, inviting you to sit and rest. As you make your way over and sit down, the wooden seat is surprisingly comfortable, as if it was made just for you. From this spot, you have a perfect view of the entire clearing and can fully immerse yourself in the peacefulness of this special place. As you settle in, you begin to notice the details around you. The way the leaves flutter slightly in the gentle breeze, the soft sounds of water moving against the pond's edge, and the occasional flutter of a bird's wings as it flies by. With each breath you take, you feel more relaxed, more at peace, and more connected to the natural beauty around you. With every inhale, imagine breathing in the calmness and tranquility of the clearing. With every exhale, release any tension or stress you've been holding on to. Feel the weight of your body supported by the bench and let your muscles relax completely, from the tips of your toes to the top of your head. Now that you are in this relaxed state, your deep inner mind is open and receptive to respond to powerful and positive suggestions, affirmations, and images that easily and automatically become true for you now. Everything you are about to hear will become deeply embedded in your subconscious and conscious mind and become true for you. Every day, in every way, you are feeling more included and accepted in your community. Every day, in every way, you are feeling more included and accepted in your community. Happytalismo. Capitulo Primero

Happytalismo.

Cuida tu red social y tu entorno.

Ética Anicómaco Aristóteles, 384-322 a.C., filósofo griego. Tabla 1. Diferencias entre la felicidad hedónica y eudaimónica. Características a comparar. Búsqueda, percepción, satisfacción vital, deseos y necesidades, duración, intensidad. Felicidad hedónica. Búsqueda del placer, sensaciones y emociones agradables. Ejemplo, comida, sexo, dinero. Eficaz a corto plazo. Riesgo de saturación y tolerancia. Nos cansa la experimentación del placer. Felicidad eudaimónica. Duración. Eficaz a largo plazo. No puede producir saturación o tolerancia. Felicidad hedónica. Intensidad. Elevada, por lo que produce adicción. Con subidas y bajadas importantes. Felicidad eudaimónica. Intensidad. Quieren ayudarnos a cambiar nuestras creencias.

What are the barriers to happiness? How do we heal? How do we maximize our potential? How do we remember who we are? How can we be of service to the world? Join the World Happiness Fest, the largest forum of happiness and well-being in the world. Visit us at www.worldhappiness.foundation. We are realizing a world with freedom, consciousness, and happiness for all. Greetings of love, compassion, kindness, joy, and peace. Do people not wish to be happy? Going back to Buddha's time, we realized that ignorance has been the greatest enemy of humanity. When Buddha spoke about dukkha or problems or suffering from anxiety, depression, and other emotions, the reason assigned were living in delusion, greed, jealousy, pride, anger, and lust. People who heard him, when they understood, they became aware and began the transformation. However, Buddha said, understanding alone does not help. People need to practice what they heard from him and then only believe in it. If people awake, they realize the ignorance and delusion and take the first step to eliminate them, they will find the journey to happiness. But what stops them from taking the first step after being aware is the mundane lifestyle, the comfort zone. I remember talking to a few senior American citizens in a remote part of Bhutan on a very cold, wintry day of the first week of December 2013 concerning the development with values and how our king connected values with kindness, equality, and humanity as principle philosophy to gross national happiness. They all noted in agreement and praised the great idea of our country and the king. However, at the end of our discussion, they said, we have lived for a long time the way we are living now. We cannot change. I spoke to YPOs coming from the US in 2016 who were visiting Bhutan. Their idea of sustainability was, let us finish what is on this planet and in the meantime, we could annex another planet to mine the resources from there for the earth. If we are aware, we would think differently about our little blue planet, the only home to human beings thus far. Unfortunately, they did not realize that with an unsustainable way of life, we would make the planet inhabitable. Why is this happening? It is a cause of this unawareness. The answer is the education system. The system is probably built on Darwinian and Newtonian theories that propagate survival of the fittest and material existence as opposed to quantum physics that says consciousness creates our reality, which the spirituality also says. Educational institutes are producing people as a product for marketplaces. They are taught how to earn for a living and not for life. The sixth world extinction will be due to human folly, as it seems, based on today's human behavior and conduct. Einstein said, a calm and modest life is happier than the chase for success as it comes with all problems associated with it. The ultimate truth is that we all pass away. Why are we doing what we are doing? Are we aware and reflective on it? The regrets of dying people have been the wish not to have worked so hard, the wish that more time was given to the loved ones, the wish to have done what was desired and not pushed away for another day, the wish to have forgiven the person, and the wish to express sorry to the person. If you already know this, why do we people continue to make the same mistake? It's because the subconscious mind has stored all that our behavior that makes us act. Thus Buddha said to practice and keep on rehearsing for as long as it does not become your Kritiya or a part of you. Our happiness is also controlled by the kind of food intake we make. Our hormones are disbalanced and we become edgy or get errs for something different that can be negative for manliness or emancipation. We need to eat right kind of food, all plant-based. It is also through the beliefs that we carry we change our genetic behaviors and write on our subconscious mind that takes control of most of our thoughts and actions. We believe in what has been told to us or sensitized through the advertisement. They play a great role in creating delusion for humanity. For example, in the US, the advertisement cost per capita is US$7,300 million. Canadian, it's about US$225 million per capita. And India is about US$7.5 million per capita. This is also, by the way, adding to the conventional economic growth called GDP. This brings to our minds all the poisons such as greed, pride, jealousy, anger, and lust along with delusion. All these actions of sensitization brings us, our minds, to the poisons of greed, pride, jealousy, anger, and lust along with delusion. In all these expenses, we see in digital platforms respectably experiences in the range of 53%, 49%, and 40%. What does this mean? It means that our body is not at work, but our eyes and senses are. Human beings are made to work with their four limbs. Again, let us remind ourselves that we are not for long on this planet. Therefore, our lives are precious. Some people think, if we are to die, let us enjoy and pass away. This is a destructive thought that will bring to an individual all the wrongdoing after the thought. Then we also wish to have our future generation happy. Rather, we struggle for them not knowing what is in store tomorrow. There is a direct conflict here. If we do what we wish to do and pass away, we create epigenesis for our generation to copy from. If we lived badly, that is what will be written in the minds of our generations after us. We need to change and come to our senses. So, the question then is, how can we be happy? What is the original nature of our soul? Purity, peace, love, happiness, bliss, strength, wisdom? Yes. Let's see which ones are we in control of. We have two worlds, the inner and the outer. The outer world is not in our control. But we can control our inner world to see the outer world the way we wish to. In this practice, we can connect with our soul, the spiritual being, connecting with this awareness which is the us. We become true human beings. If we are not in control of our inner world, then it will be controlled by the outer world. When this happens, we get angry, frustrated, jealous, lust-filled, greedy, and more. It will make us live in delusion. A mind can be freed when we begin to understand our association with our inner world and train it. If you carefully see, we are controlled by people and the world they have created. If we connect with ourselves, we will be free from any emotions. We connect with the doings and actions of others and we suffer. The moment we detach from others' thinking and doing and be ourselves, we will be happy immediately and always. We are competing with others. Why do that when we do not know the other person's life? Rather, compete with yourself by improving each day in comparison from the following day. We also become unhappy by comparing with others, their success and achievement. We forget to be grateful for all the abundance we have and leave our soul to try and becomes someone's soul. How can other's soul in us bring happiness to us? Our biggest challenge thus is we are separated from ourselves. Separation self from self happens when we begin to live in the past, future, and others' ways of lives. There are two aspects here. We are not in control of our minds, but someone is and that is why we go into different disturbing and distracting emotions. The moment we are in control of our minds, we are in control of our existence. Living in the past or the future does not help us anyway. If the past gives us a lesson, then take it and move on to today. Because what we do today, if tomorrow came for us, we will be there according to our plans. Sex and mindfulness meet because both give the pleasure of being. Do not miss out on sex and it is not a crime created by universe. Do not tell your children that it is wrong. Give them lessons and tools to overcome and be with it in a safe and secured environment. Thus, the only solution is following the wisdom, taking care of thoughts and understanding, moral, taking care of right livelihood, speech, and action, and concentration, taking care of meditation, mindfulness, and putting full efforts into all the three areas of our existence. Connecting self with self, self with others, and self with nature. Thank you so much. Tashi Delek. What are the barriers to happiness? How do we heal? How do we maximize our potential? Dedicated to Mother Earth, the only home we have. Dear Mother Earth, we have brought unmeasurable pain to you, yet you are forgiving and patient with us. Your cry is unheard because we are pretentiously deaf. Despite that, you wake up to our every call. You feed us, nurture and nourish us with all the elements that we are and need to live with. Human greed has killed your soil, as we take oil more important that causes global warming and climate crisis, than the soil that gives us reason to live. We are stupidly ignorant and live in delusion. Oh Mother Earth, forgive us. We are not ashamed of what we do unto you. You not only forgive us, but bear every mistake we make. For how long, Mother? You are showing signs of distress. Forgive us. Some of your children are greedy. They loot you and all other fellow humans in the process, yet you give us love and compassion. But we do not understand you because we have traded our souls for pride. Oh Mother Earth, forgive us and help us awake to our senses for our own existence. Thank you, Mother Earth, for being with us.

No Barriers - Contemplating Faith and Forgiveness with Pastor and Author, Nadia Bolz-Weber

Dave brought Nadia in as a guest after he heard her speak at the Nantucket Project and was incredibly impressed with her and the parallels of her words and our No Barriers messaging.

All three hosts sat down with Nadia in our studio in Golden to talk about her own journey to become a Pastor for House for All Sinners and Saints, a congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Denver, Colorado. From her struggles with alcoholism and feeling lost in the world, Nadia found a community when she entered the world of comedy and became a stand up comedian. Using humor and her faith as therapy, she eventually began to heal and transformed her trauma into a passion for helping others.

Now, she has two best-selling books and most recently released her latest book, Shameless, an examination and take down of the "harmful and antiquated ideas about sex, gender, and our bodies."

The hosts and Nadia discuss the concepts of forgiveness, faith, trust, and spirit in this hour of reflection.

I think we've got to reach for the both and. The grief people are experiencing, the suffering, I think you can tell the truth about that and about how much fear we're living in and say, I have really loved sitting down and eating all my meals with my daughter and my boyfriend. You know, like there's been a way that this slowing down has made me cherish things about my home that I've never cherished. Like both things can be true. You know, just like we can be simultaneously sinner and saint. This can be simultaneously horrible and devastating and beautiful and unexpectedly joyful. It's easy to talk about the successes, but what doesn't get talked about enough is the struggle. My name is Eric Weinmeir. I've gotten the chance to ascend Mount Everest, to climb the tallest mountain in every continent, to kayak the Grand Canyon. And I happen to be blind. It's been a struggle to live what I call a no barriers life, to define it, to push the parameters of what it means. And part of the equation is diving into the learning process and trying to illuminate the universal elements that exist along the way. In that unexplored terrain between those dark places we find ourselves in and the summit exists a map. That map, that way forward is what we call no barriers. Today we need Nadia Bolz Weber, who's an ordained Lutheran pastor, founder of House for All Sinners and Saints in Denver, Colorado, the creator and host of the podcast, The Confessional, and the author of three New York times bestselling memoirs, including her most recent, Shameless, A Sexual Reformation. Nadia writes and speaks about personal failings, recovery, grace, faith, and really whatever the hell else she wants to. Enjoy the conversation. Welcome back to our weekly no barriers podcast series, where we continue to explore this extraordinary moment in our lives while remaining true to the theme we've always emphasized here, which is idea that what's within you is stronger than what's in your way. Special thanks to Prudential and Wells Fargo for their generous support of this podcast series. Well, Nadia, we're coming up on our 50th episode here, and we wanted to bring you back because first and foremost, we believe you'll offer some really great insight into this unique moment in our lives. And in addition, our previous conversation with you, which for our listeners who haven't heard it, it's episode 16. Check it out. It was our most downloaded ever. So Nadia, welcome back to the show. Oh, I'm so glad to be back with you guys. If I remember correctly, the last time I was on, it was right after a blizzard and I had to drive through much snow to get to you. Yeah. So I had a barrier just to get to you guys, but I was stronger and I managed to get there. And the barrier now is that it's eight 30 in the morning and I managed to also get here. So I think your theory about what's in us is stronger than what's in our way has proved true that I've been here twice now. That inner strength to set your alarm clock. Yeah, I know. Exactly. Well, Nadia, I'd love to hear, you know, you, you serve so many people in your work as a, as a pastor, you know, writer, speaker, comedian. What are some of the themes you're hearing from the community you serve right now? What are people wrestling with? You know, there's, there's just so much. I think one of the things is that everybody is experiencing some form of grief right now and it, and it keeps coming and being in grief is so sort of disfiguring because the thing that you've lost, you don't ever get back and the experience of losing it is almost new every day because it's one more day that that loss is still present. And so a singular loss can present itself in terms of grief in new ways every day. But what we're dealing with is new things to grief every day that, that now it's that, oh my gosh, I was holding onto the hope that I could still go and fly across the country when my grandchild is born in July and realizing now today, a new grief is okay, I don't get to do that. Or a new grief is my child, like for that one was just a made up example, but my 21 year old daughter, her whole world revolves around being able to work at the summer camp that she grew up in going to. Now she's on staff and realizing she's probably not going to be able to get that. So there are these new things to grief every day, things that are canceled, things that you won't get back. Grieving is a human thing because we, everybody loses people and loses things, but we get it at least fucking take turns generally. And now we're not, it's everyone. It's the whole planet. And so how do you deal with the exhaustion of that? The relentlessness of that, the, the, it's every single day. It's not going away of that. That's what I think people more than anything are trying to manage in this moment. Yeah. It feels like a weight, doesn't it? Like it's like a weight that can tend to feel heavier if you allow it to. For sure. And you are someone, Nadia, who has worked with people for your entire career who are experiencing grief of some form or another. And so, you know, with this collective grief that we're experiencing, what is someone, you know, what do you, what do you advise us? How do we handle it? Because I've heard you talk about Nadia, this idea as well, that like, there's a kind of a fine line between anxiety and hope. It's kind of like they're close neighbors, which I thought was really fascinating. Yeah. One of the ways that we need to learn how to do this moment is to figure out who can I just take turns with? Like, I'm going to be the one who just can't keep it together today. And you can hold that. And because we both know it's going to be you tomorrow. And so we are realizing how much we need each other because of the separation that we're experiencing right now. But I think we're trying, I think trying to figure out how do we just take turns being the one who can't deal with it is pretty critical. At least it's been critical for me. Yeah. So Nadia, your new podcast is called Confessional. And I'm curious why you started that new podcast. And also why, why are confessionals so important for people? Well, I think it came from being in two different communities that, that sort of practice some form of confession, both the Lutheran church and Alcoholics Anonymous. So both of those communities have a sort of more formal process for that and realizing how needed it is and how cathartic it is. And also just sort of being really aware that these, these worst moments of our lives, you know, the times when we were at our worst, where we did something that hurt other people or we said something horrible or we did something we regretted that those, those are these ghosts that just can haunt us our whole lives. And, and I, and I think that's okay, but I think, I think like telling the truth about that stuff and allowing it to sort of metabolize into our spiritual process as maturing humans is a natural thing. And yet there aren't a lot of mechanisms available for it. And so I just, and the other reason I did it is that I just, I've always wanted to feel less alone. And I, I feel less alone when somebody tells me something horrible about themselves. Like, I don't think that we are just the sum total of the worst thing we've done as Brian Stevenson says. So that's why I opened up the confessional. Nadia, you write and talk a lot about shame and grief and compassion for ourselves. And a lot of the people I interact with have this feeling of hearing stories of all these great things that people are doing during this moment and a sense of almost like, I'm not doing enough. I'm not being a good enough parent. I'm not being a good enough employee. I'm not being a good enough teacher of my kids now that I'm locked at home with my kids. And in a, in a more subtle way, there's a lot of shame in that, in my mind of like, I'm not being as good as I should be in this moment. Can you give us a little perspective on that? Boy, only that, like, I totally relate. And also, I mean, grief takes up a lot of bandwidth and I think just having compassion for ourselves and other people around that, because it really is a shared grief. Human beings were wired to take turns grieving. Like that's how the whole system is set up, you know? And like, we're not taking turns. We're all doing it now and we're doing it in different ways. You know, those of us who've lost our ability to buy groceries are going to be grieving in a very different way than those of us who are missing our vacation to Cabo, you know? But, but, but it's all grief. And, and, and so if that is taking up so much of our bandwidth and then we have Zoom calls we have to be on that are like required and we have to feed ourselves and our family. Boy, how much left, how much is left over for really, you know? I mean, for some of us, there's not a lot left over to learn a new fucking skill, you know, to like master Spanish. I'm curious, as we're going through this collective grief, like where do we find the space to share it with others and not just put on our best face all the time? Cause I think that it's weird to share this kind of stuff in a Zoom call. Like how do you find the space to really share how hard this is with someone when you can't do it face to face? Yeah. I, I think just people allowing for a culture of turn-taking is really important to, you

No Barriers - Channeling Pain into Positive: Speaking with Running Man, Charlie Engle

Our hosts, Jeff Evans and Erik Weihenmayer, had the opportunity to catch Charlie for an hour during his extremely busy schedule. Charlie was in the midst of training to head off on his latest pursuit: to run from the lowest point on earth; the Dead Sea to the tallest; the summit of Mt. Everest. Jeff and Erik wanted to hear more about not only his athletic accomplishments (too many for one podcast!) but to hear about how he got to this place of focus in his life.

Charlie Engle is many things: a writer, runner, recovering addict and speaker. He’s run across the Sahara Desert, the Amazon, swum with crocodiles and summited ice covered volcanoes, but according to Charlie his greatest challenge has been becoming sober. He has stayed clean since 1992 and has channeled his addictive nature into his passion to run and what he calls “positive, purpose-driven pursuits.”

He discusses the mental clarity and resolve it takes to run such long distances and not avoid pain but to tap into it. He also talks about the sheer logistics and planning that go into endeavors like the ones he takes on and the folks in his life who help make it all possible - like his wife who works tirelessly on logistics behind the scenes.

In 2016, he wrote a memoir titled, “The Running Man” to illuminate the lessons he’s learned in his struggles and his triumphs.

No Barriers - Harnessing Positivity with Jim Kwok

This much is true... no one gets outta here alive.

If you had the option of knowing the day you would die and how it would happen, would you want to know?

This is Jim.

Jim was very much alive when this episode was recorded.

Jim was dead 2 months later..

Jim has a Stage 4, terminal cancer diagnosis and has ceased all treatment. Two weeks before this episode was recorded he was told he had roughly a month to live.

Since his diagnosis, Jim has endured countless rounds of chemo, multiple surgeries and a brief ‘remission’.  He has accepted his fate and has made it his mission to squeeze as much life out of the short time he has left. And along with that, has committed himself to encouraging people to wake the hell up with regards to valuing this one precious life that we each have. To not forget how fleeting and finite it all is. To love those around you and live the best version of your life.

We’re grateful to him for that critical reminder that our walk on this planet is brief and that every minute counts. It’s easy to get caught up in the circus that surrounds us. Instead, let’s step outside, breathe, hug, share, appreciate, love. --- Jeff Evans, No Barriers Podcast Host.

Executive Director & Professor Lobsang Tenzin Negi on the Central Tenants and Urgency of Compassion

In this special exchange, Pooja and Professor Negi discuss the central tenants and urgency of compassion, a focus of His Holiness, the Dalai Lama. Dr. Negi expands on how although humans have made tremendous progress from an outward, material standpoint, we have neglected to develop the core inner values that lead to contentment and inner peace. In other words, we have been focused on educating the mind, while forgetting to educate the heart.

Dr. Negi shares how compassion is linked to the idea of safety and security in a world with so much diverse thought, biases, and differing groups of people. It is in this kind of world, especially, that people need to feel safe. He shares that at the heart of compassion is a sense of meaningful, tender connection with each other, and that creates a sense of security and trust, happiness and love.

Pooja and Dr. Negi also uncover the links between traditional Tibetan Buddhist mind training practices called "Lojong", which systematically look within, closely observing what triggers our emotions. This scientific examination parallels some of the main practices and strategies used in CBT, originating in the 1960's by Dr. Aaron Beck, globally recognized as the father of Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) and one of the world’s leading researchers in psychopathology.

--

LOBSANG TENZIN NEGI, Ph.D. is the co-founder and Executive Director of the Center for Contemplative Science and Compassion-Based Ethics at Emory University, formerly the Emory-Tibet Partnership. Prof. Negi is also a Professor of Pedagogy in Emory University’s Department of Religion and the founder and spiritual director of Drepung Loseling Monastery, Inc., in Atlanta, GA.

Over the past two decades, Prof. Negi has been a pioneer of compassion training programs for adults and children and he has contributed to the development and burgeoning of compassion science through his research initiatives and collaborations.

Through his center, Prof. Negi has developed and now oversees three programs, which are dedicated to expanding compassion and engaging in research. In 2004, Prof. Negi developed CBCT® (Cognitively-Based Compassion Training), a secularized contemplative program based on Tibetan Buddhist mind training practices that deliberately and systematically works to cultivate compassion. He also oversees SEE Learning™ (Social, Emotional and Ethical Learning), a program that develops and implements curricula for kindergarten through university level education for the education of heart and mind. The third program of the center is the Emory-Tibet Science Initiative, a program he developed, at the invitation of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, to develop and implement a comprehensive modern science curriculum specifically for Tibetan monastics.

Prof. Negi was born in Kinnaur, a remote Himalayan region adjoining Tibet. A former monk of 27 years, he began his monastic training at The Institute of Buddhist Dialectics in Dharamasala, India and continued his education at Drepung Loseling Monastery in south India, where in 1994 he received the Geshe Lharampa degree. Prof. Negi completed his Ph.D. at Emory University in 1999; his interdisciplinary dissertation centered on traditional Buddhist and contemporary Western approaches to emotions and their impact on wellness. His current research focuses on the complementarity of modern science and contemplative practice.

Professor Andrew Harman on a Calm Mind, Buddhism and Science

Our guest today is Dr. Andrew harman, a Professor of Virology and Immunology at the University of Sydney School of Medicine and an ordained Buddhist who has much insight on how Buddhist practices and philosophy can help us deal with change, restlessness and uncertainty in our fast moving world.

He shares how acceptance of your reality can help bring about calm. Dr. Harman and Pooja talk extensively about how we may need to reset our definition of "happiness" – instead of desperately seeking out happiness through exciting, impermanent experiences, things, people or moments, we might instead think of happiness as a state of equanimity which is defined as mental calmness, composure, and evenness of temper. Equanimity, according to Dr Harman, comes from doing the inner work and obtaining wisdom and insight from it.

In other words, from a Buddhist standpoint, real happiness is maintaining a state of inner peace no matter what is happening in the outside world.

In this very special discussion, Dr. Harman also answers how science and Buddhism go hand in hand, why Vipassana mediation may not work for some, and how Albert Einstein may be the best role model to date in helping us see how spirituality or religion can add value along with science in helping us live with more grace, calm, rootedness, and compassion.

From Plum Village. A Cloud Never Dies: The Passing of Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh

At such a demanding and delicate time, the presenters, Zen Buddhist monk Brother Phap Huu and lay Buddhist practitioner and journalist Jo Confino, reflect on Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh passing on January 22nd, 2022. They offer a profound insight into the memorial week, the funeral, impact on the Plum Village community, and the overwhelming global response.

This installment of the podcast is an intimate account of the period between the announcement of Thich Nhat Hanh’s passing and the recording of this episode: “a retreat of silence, and a retreat of remembering Thay and continuing Thay.”

Brother Phap Huu, Thay’s former attendant and current Abbot of the Upper Hamlet, shares his personal relationship with Thich Nhat Hanh and how these events have impacted him. He also shares a detailed behind-the-scenes look at the traditional ceremonies and memorial services, preparations, and processions, as well as personal stories from the Plum Village communities over the eight days following the beloved teacher’s passing.

The conversation delves into: the significance of the ceremonies’ texts; the deep practises underpinning the formalities; Thay becoming a spiritual ancestor; deep levels of aspiration; the symbolic homes for Thay’s ashes; acceptance, togetherness, and impermanence; the relevance of Thay’s teachings for years to come; and what it means to be the continuation of Thay.

The episode ends with a short meditation on continuation and gratitude, guided by Brother Phap Huu.

Saamdu Chetri on the Technology for Peace and Happiness

Understanding peace and happiness, we realize that they are an integral part of each other. When we are happy, we are in peace. Or when we are in peace, we are in happiness. We also know from quantum physics that peace is the highest vibration of our energy, which has a hertz of 600 per second vibration, and beyond 700 hertz per second vibration is enlightenment, where we can be totally free from mental or physical effect from both inner and outer environments.

We all do not wish to be enlightened but look for easier ways in life to be happy and in peace. However, there's no quick fix for achieving peace or happiness. We need to free ourselves from any kind of attachment, be it emotional or material, and, we are very much in both of them.

A great king signified GNH must serve a purpose, which is development with values, connecting kindness, equality, and humanity. So my first question is, what is responsible innovation? I understand that it means simply any innovation that does not harm humanity and nature, but brings freedom, peace, and happiness to every sentient beings on the planet Earth. Understanding peace and happiness, we realize that they are integral part of each other. When we are happy, we are in peace. Or when we are in peace, we are in happiness. We also know from the quantum physics that peace is the highest vibration of our energy, which has a hertz of 600 per second vibration, and beyond 700 hertz per second vibration is enlightenment, where we can be totally free from mental or physical effect from both inner and outer environments. We all do not wish to be enlightened, but look for easier ways in life to be happy and in peace. However, there is no quick fix for achieving peace or happiness. We need to free ourselves from any kind of attachment, be it emotional or material or and we are very much in both of them. Second question, what stops us to be vibrating at such high levels of peace and happiness? At the most, we reach to the willingness of the vibration and those we can go up to the acceptance and reasoning. They are very close to 500 hertz vibration per second, which is unconditional love and at 540 hertz per second is joy and could be translated into happiness. First, taking stock of a few of the innovations that have brought the world into sufferings. We all know for sure one is the arms and ammunition and the second is genetically modified seeds for the greed and not hunger. Both of these are discoveries for the one to rule the world. They have played havoc for the peace and happiness of all human beings, including sentient beings. They have been successful to destroy human habitats, natural environment, and minds and health of people in the world. Science and technology had advanced, but many are oriented to destruction side of humanity. A drone was simulated a few years ago with three grams of shaped explosives loaded in it with a profile of a statue and released. It was programmed to hit the statue and it just flew and hit the forehead of the statue and the head exploded. The drone is in the size of a thumb, hardly visible in the air and nothing can stop it from finding you. These are supposed to be built for eliminating the bad. Who is bad? All human beings are good. We need to cultivate it. Often the goodness of each of us is hidden in the recess of our subconscious mind, obtained from the sensitization of the environment we lived and thus the paradigm that shifted our perceptions accordingly right from our childhood, in fact right from our mother's womb. Further, the technological innovations that are so important have been distancing human beings through digital divide and less of physical contact. Can technology bring love, which is two levels of vibration below the joy and peace? If we cannot reach to the state of spreading unconditional love, we cannot imagine of being in happiness and peace. Third, the fossil fuel run engines, be it vehicles or industries for food and energy generation, are contributing to the rise in global warming and letting human change their reality to be divided, greedy, competitive, comparing, complaining. Although all such innovations may have been targeted towards betterment of humanity. A professor during a conference in South Korea in 2016 told us, if we had the technology with which just by the wink of our eyes, everything is provided to you, it would bring happiness for humanity. This, I felt, was the end of humanity and beginning of robotic world. AI is advancing at a fast pace and holograms are upcoming future that is seen beneficial today, may bring more pain to humanity as we grow over in years to come. Famous people such as actors and doctors are used for advertisement of all products that are harmful, shifting the paradigm of individual to fall prey to such products and create market for economy. One sick medical world, from doctors to farmers, benefit. This is our world of technology. Fourth question is, how can we reach to that level of peace and happiness in hertz vibration? We as grown-ups today have more than 52 trillion volts of equivalent energy in us. So why can we not vibrate to that level of love, joy and peace? It is possible only when we eliminate the ignorance and delusion of our minds and people begin to reach to their innate human potential to question right from wrong, good from evil. Here, ethics and morals can help us, the innovative technology. This is where education comes in and I am happy and proud that new education policy in India is targeted to reach to the hilt of human awareness, monitoring children right from their childhood. If there would be a technology to train the minds of every individual to ask questions, what she or he is believing, thinking and acting, and accordingly guiding them, we would very quickly reach to a peaceful and a happy world. This may come, but it would take many more years to manifest, and as well, it will make human being very, very dependent. The earliest and the easiest and the best is to produce a technology that helps guide a child as parents in human values for ethics and moral. It is not a rocket science, rather a common sense organized. This is what we have failed because of the greed, jealousy, pride, anger, excessive desires, blinded by delusion and ignorance. If Buddha came back today, he would cry before he could find his own peace to help others overcome their sufferings. To a great account, the kind of education today makes everyone a product in the marketplace, competitive, shrewd and greedy. It must change. It must help children to build their lives, not only living. They must be made to realize that life is more important than luxurious living. For example, the passion or what every child is born for must be found out. Technology can help here, innovate it. If we all learn to go back to the basics and organize with them, we will make a happier, peaceful and a sustainable world for us and the generations after us. It must all come home to us every day that we will be gone from this planet. If we remind ourselves as mortals, we may not do things that create unhappiness for self and others. And if we try to organize the four dimensions of our inner self, one, the heart is to love and bring passion in being. Head is to think and create a vision for self and everyone connected to him or her. Spirit is to develop consciousness and leave a legacy behind. Finally, the soul can only leave around us if we physically take care of ourselves with the right kind of food that do not bring harm to the self and others, including the nature, and do not contribute directly or indirectly to global warming. And we must sleep eight hours to rejuvenate the body and mind and do 30 minutes of sweating exercise with the use of our four limbs as opposed to that the technology may feed us doing nothing. But remember, we are human beings and not robots. Peace is not the absence of war alone, as we all know. It is when we are able to walk with freedom. There is respect for each other. We celebrate each other's culture and there is tolerance for one another or with one another. And everyone has a loving speech filled with love and gratitude. Zen Buddhist master, his holiness Thich Nhat Hanh said, peace in oneself is peace in the world. And true happiness is based on peace and that is when you are in freedom, not what you understand of our unethical freedom. It is beyond the speech and conduct that we often see in the journalism. His holiness Dalai Lama said, peace does not fall from sky. It is in our action. He also said, happiness is not ready made. It comes from our own actions. In continuation, Mahatma Gandhi said, happiness is when what you think, speak and act are in harmony. On the other hand, Einstein said, happiness is in calmness and humility. And peace is not merely the absence of war, but presence of justice, of love, of order, in short, he said, of good governance, self as well as of the government. Finally, all great leaders have said, happiness is in the process, like peace is. Happiness is illusionary if it takes you to search outside of you, while we all say and we all know that happiness and peace are within us. Happiness can be practiced as a skill and so can peace be. We must start developing the skills for peace and happiness right from mother's womb and in early learning schools. It will bring a sea of change in one generation. Do we dare get rid of our delusion and greed? This is the inner technology that we must build with our children and ourselves. Final question, how to practice both peace and happiness? A big question, but with a very simple answer. Do question every thought that passes you, leading to words or action. No technology can help us change our processes. It arises from within. And if we change that through innovative education systems, we will be able to journey with happiness and peace and the world will become a better place for every sentient beings to play on. Please allow me to conclude my talk with a song on happiness. Happiness is here and now. I have dropped my worries. Nowhere to go, nothing to do. And I'm not in a hurry. Happiness is here and now. I have dropped my worries. Somewhere to go, something to do. But I'm not in a hurry

From Plum Village. From Extraction to Regeneration: Healing Ourselves, Healing Society with Brother Phap Linh

In this episode, the presenters, Zen Buddhist monk Brother Phap Huu and lay Buddhist practitioner and journalist Jo Confino, are joined by special guest, Zen Buddhist monk Brother Phap Linh (Brother Spirit). Together, they discuss eco-anxiety, the challenges of and solutions for shifting to a new paradigm which can heal us and our planet, and whether it’s possible to change our minds, hearts, and future. Plus: how can you be at peace in what feels like a battlefield?

The conversation touches upon “the decisive decade”; individualism and competition; interdependence; handling fear; transformation; change in “the age of collective procrastination”; and opportunities in difficult times. Is it possible to ‘sit’ with collapse?

Brother Phap Linh (Brother Spirit) shares his journey of transformation, from studying sciences at Cambridge, to numerous retreats, and eventual monastic life.

He further talks about creating transformation at both personal and collective levels; the cult of individualism; societal numbness; handling the energy of negativity; the basis of understanding reality, and what nourishes our views and beliefs; the economic conceit ‘the tragedy of the commons’; creating shared visions and aspirations; and telling new stories. And how do you change your view when you’re caught in the old paradigm?

Brother Phap Huu shares insights on how to not lose ourselves in a fast-paced environment, and looks at: fundamental questions; procrastination; individual aspirations; becoming free from attachment; striving and the importance of stopping; learning in the community; the Six Harmonies; and the joy of sharing.

There’s also important advice for those ‘burning out’ in the environmental movement.

Jo recollects Thich Nhat Hanh’s speech to the members of the UK Parliament and his thoughts on conflictual political systems. He further muses on the lasting joy of community life.

The episode ends with a short meditation on gratitude and Mother Earth, guided by Brother Phap Linh.

From Plum Village - Zen and the Art of Saving the Planet with Sister True Dedication

Welcome to episode four of The Way Out Is In: The Zen Art of Living, a podcast series mirroring Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh’s deep teachings of Buddhist philosophy: a simple yet profound methodology for dealing with our suffering, and for creating more happiness and joy in our lives.

In this episode, presenters Zen Buddhist monk Brother Phap Huu and lay Buddhist practitioner and journalist Jo Confino are joined by special guest Zen Buddhist nun Sister True Dedication (Sister Hien Nghiem). Together, they address contemporary environmental crises and Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh’s ethical framework of living, to help us reach a better future – as presented in his new book, Zen and the Art of Saving the Planet.

The three further discuss Buddhist insights into the many existential crises faced by the global community; practical ways people can become empowered; not being overwhelmed by the suffering in the world, and how to work with our emotions to take positive action.

Jo recollects interviewing Christiana Figueres, the architect of the Paris Climate Agreement, including on how the practice of mindfulness was instrumental in her achievements, and the importance of deep listening in global talks.

Brother Phap Huu explains the insight of interbeing; the practice of gratitude; and shares about walking the (sustainability) talk in Plum Village; the ‘no car days’, shifting to veganism during a 800-people retreat, and starting a happy farm to become more self-sufficient and in touch with the Earth as a community of practitioners.

Sister True Dedication talks about editing Thich Nhat Hanh’s new book, Zen and the Art of Saving the Planet; the hardest part of working on a book; Thay’s involvement in the environmental movement since the early 1970s, as a pioneer of deep ecology; the importance of joy and vitality for facing hard times; falling in love with the Earth; accessing the insight of interbeing in our daily lives, and having fulfilled present moments; finding peace and equanimity in a suffering world; practicing deep truth; taking care of our despair.

Finally, the sister ends the episode with a guided meditation.

Amanda Janoo and the Design of Policies for a Wellbeing Economy

One of my favorite examples towards a Wellbeing Economy is Wales. Because they not only developed seven wellbeing goals, but they really thought a lot about how does this translate into a different form of governance and way of working? So they have these five principles for how they want to work together. And one is taking a long-term perspective? So not just constantly thinking about the short-term crises, but really the long term goals. Focusing on prevention? So as we were saying earlier, how do we prevent the economic, or environmental, or social crises from starting in the first place? By getting the economy to do more of the heavy lifting in the first place. How do we support greater integration, breaking down silos, and supporting more collaboration. Not only across governments agencies, but with society at large. And fostering and supporting greater engagement by people.

And with these principles in mind, they realized that that needed to also translate into how they were measuring their wellbeing goals. So I love that they put a big emphasis here on effective communication. So they wanted to make sure that any indicator that was chosen could be immediately grasped the public. That they could intuitively understand why that indicator related to one of the goals or multiple goals that they have identified is important for their society.

Carl Johan Calleman on the Macro Cosmic Quantum Theory to World Happiness

Quantum theory, pretty much everyone has heard about it, at least anyone who is interested in novel thinking of all kinds, but a quantum theory in its traditional form, which is microcosmic quantum theory is now about a hundred years old. And for a long time, this was just a very fascinating subject for physicists and chemists, and people in the hard sciences. Especially, I would say that the atom model created by Niels Bohr in 1913 with the whole idea that there are such things as quantum leaps when it comes to the orbits of electrons revolving around the nucleus of an atom. That whole concept is really a little bit of a miracle. It's something that we really can't grasp from our everyday experience of how reality works. In other words, there is a shift ... Oh, sorry. There is a shift, an instantaneous shift between the energy levels of electrons that takes place under certain conditions inside the electron.

Now, since that time, since the initial pioneers worked with microcosmic quantum theory, it's broadened its appeal to people much far outside of the actual hard sciences where it was developed. And particularly in the past 20 years, there's been a lot of focus on it among people that are interested in spirituality and consciousness. And the reason is that there is, I think, a feeling that there is some kind of an underlying field to the reality that is provided by quantum theory and that that underlying field is somehow connected to human spirituality and to the divine as such.

Mo Gawdat and Dorota Stanczyk on Self-Love, Acceptance and (Re) Connection

I would say the first step to reconnect with either ourselves, or nature, or anyone, is to create a space for it, to create time for it. And that means that even if you have a conversation with someone, don't be somewhere else in your mind, because actually when you are somewhere else when your mind is preoccupied, you are not present. And you actually don't even remember that moment happening, because you wonder, right. So I believe that the first step to well-being in general, to really feeling happier, to really feeling reconnected is to cultivate and to learn to be present. And that's not as easy as it sounds because it requires to still the mind. It requires to sit down, it requires to be patient with ourselves, and it requires to listen and requires to receive and just basically to surrender to the experience.

Vandana Shiva on (Re) Connection and Healing Throughout Food

Half the people of the world are still farmers. We forget that. Every fourth in the farmer of the world is in India. These are small farmers, and they provide 80% of the food we eat. If we were to think of it, half of humanity could be happier if you could just have a better food system. We don't have to destroy the earth.

I was helping the Sri Lankans, because the Sri Lankans have decided they won't use chemicals, and they will go organic. The government had asked me, and then the organic farmers had asked me, for training, and this was happening while the ship was sinking on the coastline, in Colombo. What is the ship carrying? Nitric acid to make ammonia, a fertilizer.

There was a young girl who rang me up and said, "The sea, I am a scuba diver, the corals are dead." I said, "The damage we do to the earth and the damage to the ocean is the same damage. We got to start relating the death of the oceans and the depth of soil." That is true ecology. That's true science.

Loretta Breuning on 3 Obstacles to Happiness (and how to relieve them)

The first obstacle is waiting for permission to be happy. Many people wait for permission to be happy instead of giving themselves permission. It's easy to do this with all good intentions, you think I can't be happy until everyone else is happy. So you wait until there's some kind of signal that everyone else is happy so now it's allowed.

Well, if you do that, you will never be happy because there will always be some unhappy people, following the herd will not lead you to happiness. And in fact, no one in human history would ever have been happy if we had to wait until every single person was happy. So as much as you may feel awkward or selfish about this, you have to blaze your own trail to happiness, which starts with giving yourself permission to do that. And you can actually help others to do that by leading the way and showing them that it's possible.

You may think you don't know how to give yourself permission to be happy, but I explain that in detail in my book, The Science of Positivity: Stop Negative Thought Patterns by Changing Your Brain Chemistry. Now, let's think about the second big obstacle to happiness that many people create for themselves, and that is not getting enough sleep. Did you know that the chemicals that make us feel good are actually manufactured while we're sleeping? So if you don't get enough sleep, then when you wake up in the morning, your tank is empty and you literally can't feel happy, even when good things are happening to you. What a waste. So you need to get plenty of sleep in order to manufacture your happy brain chemicals and have a full tank so that you can just easily release them all day. And if you make sleep your top priority, then you will figure out a way to get enough sleep.

The last self-created obstacle to happiness is unrealistic expectations. Now, it's very easy to have unrealistic expectations and in fact, hard to have realistic expectations. The first reason for that is that we're always told to dream big. So you probably think that big dreams are the way to be happy, but here's the problem with that. If you imagine yourself at the bottom of a huge mountain and you need to get to the top of the mountain in your opinion, in order to be happy. Well, the fact is that your brain only releases dopamine, that good feeling of joy and excitement when you see yourself approaching a reward. So you have to actually see yourself getting closer in order to feel good. Now, if you are always focusing on a goal, but so far away, and you don't see yourself getting closer, then you're just not going to release the dopamine.

We are realizing a world with freedom, consciousness, and happiness for all. Does it seem like the path to happiness is full of obstacles? I'm going to give you good news. There are many obstacles on the path to happiness that you've created yourself, and that means you can clear the obstacles yourself. I'm Loretta Bruning, founder of the Inner Mammal Institute and author of Habits of a Happy Brain, Retrain Your Brain to Boost Your Serotonin, Dopamine, Oxytocin, and Endorphin Levels. Here are three big obstacles to happiness that you are creating so that you can now go out and clear them. The first one is waiting for permission to be happy. Many people wait for permission to be happy instead of giving themselves permission. It's easy to do this with all good intentions. You think, I can't be happy until everyone else is happy. So you wait until there's some kind of signal that everyone else is happy, so now it's allowed. Well, if you do that, you will never be happy because there will always be some unhappy people. Did you know that the chemicals that make us feel good are actually manufactured while we're sleeping? So if you don't get enough sleep, then when you wake up in the morning, your tank is empty and you literally can't feel happy even when good things are happening to you. Now it's very easy to have unrealistic expectations and in fact, hard to have realistic expectations. The first reason for that is that we're always told to dream big. So you probably think that big dreams are the way to be happy. But here's the problem with that. If you imagine yourself at the bottom of a huge mountain and you need to get to the top of the mountain in your opinion, in order to be happy, well, the fact is that your brain only releases dopamine, that good feeling of joy and excitement when you see yourself approaching a reward. So you have to actually see yourself getting closer in order to feel good. Now, if you're only focusing on a goal that's so far away and you don't see yourself getting closer, then you're just not going to release the dopamine. A simple famous example of that is a young person who's told to focus on their dreams. And so they dream that they're going to be a rock star or a YouTube star. And that might feel good in the short run. But over time, they see that they're not really getting any closer to being a star. So if you think you need to be a star to be happy, then soon you're just not going to get closer. You're not going to release the dopamine. Now, a bigger reason why we have unrealistic expectations is because our biology is actually quite confusing. The brain chemicals that make us feel good are only released in short spurts. So we always have to do more to get more. Now, whatever it is that makes you happy, it's hard to figure out what turns on those spurts because they're controlled by the animal part of your brain, which is the limbic system and not by the verbal part of your brain, which is the cortex. Now, these two brains are actually literally not on speaking terms because your animal brain can't use language. So it can't tell you in words why it's releasing the happy chemicals. And that's why we tend to rely on philosophers and poets to tell us what makes us happy. But they're only in the verbal brain. So we really need to understand the biology of animals to understand what actually triggers our happy chemicals. And even when we find that out, it's not really what you want to hear. What makes animals happy is taking a step toward meeting their survival needs. Now, this may seem confusing because many things that people do to be happy may seem not especially good for survival. And you may think, oh, that's not survival. But in fact, our brains are wired by past experience. So with this quirky brain, we all have quirky ways of turning on our happy chemicals because whatever made you happy in your youth is what turns on your happy chemicals today because that built the pathways to the on switch of your dopamine, serotonin, oxytocin, and endorphin. This is a difficult brain to manage. And now we're trying to manage our nonverbal brain by using our verbal brain. It's all quite complicated with this equipment we've inherited. And I explain how to do that in all of my books. But again, it all starts with realistic expectations about happy chemicals. So what is a realistic expectation? That my happy chemicals did not evolve to be on all the time. They did not evolve to reward you with a good feeling when you're just sitting on the couch. They evolved to reward you with a good feeling when you take action to meet your survival needs. And again, it's kind of quirky because we define those survival needs with neural pathways built from past experience. But the bottom line is your happy chemicals are quickly metabolized. So whenever you feel good, the good feeling is soon gone. Your body just uses up that chemical, eliminates it, and you always have to do more to get more. You always have to take another step, more action to meet your survival needs in order to trigger more happy chemicals. Now that's what creates that sort of treadmill feeling that people find frustrating. But when you know that that's absolutely natural and normal and it's what kept our ancestors alive for all these millennia, then you can just sort of relax and accept that and focus on your next step toward meeting your survival needs and know that you have power over your happy chemicals. Because when you take that next step, you get a little bit of good feeling and soon it's gone and then you take that next step. And now you feel not only that you have a little bit of good feeling, but you have power over it and you build new neural pathways to feel good in new ways instead of just repeating what triggered your happy chemicals in the past. This is great news if you are open to it instead of just expecting to be happy by sitting on the couch and reading poetry and philosophy. It may seem hard to accept, so let's think of a simple example. Let's say you're a gazelle and you smell a predator. You think a lion is near you, so you start to run. You focus on the path in front of you. If you stay focused on the path in front of you, you escape the lion and soon you're back to enjoying fresh grass. If you focus on the lion instead, you're going to trip and you're going to get eaten. So we evolved to focus on the path in front of us and keep taking that next step rather than obsessing over potential threats. And it's interesting to know how this works. The animal part of your brain is always alert for potential threats, just like a gazelle is always alert for lions. But obsessing over potential threats is when the verbal cortex is so focused on looking for threats that it can actually sort of create threats when they're not there, which is to say a human can imagine a lion when it's not there, even though a gazelle only worries about lions when it can smell one. Now, there are some advantages to being human. Like we can anticipate threats in time to take action. But the disadvantage is that you can dwell on threats so much that you never take that next step and then you never trigger your happy chemicals. And then you blame the herd. Why are they not taking a step? It's their fault that I'm not happy. You wait for the rest of the herd to take action and you think it's powerless for you to take action on your own. But once you understand your brain, you can go for it. You can know that a small step toward meeting your survival needs will stimulate a good feeling. And then you can just take another small step and another and another and you will keep stimulating your happy brain chemicals and actually build a new pathway that makes it easier to turn them on with those healthy steps instead of turning them on with unhealthy steps. I explain this all in lots of detail on my website, innermammalinstitute.org. innermammalinstitute.org. There are plenty of free resources. And if you don't like to read, there are plenty of resources to listen to and watch. And if you speak Spanish, there are plenty of resources in Spanish. And actually, if you speak Russian, there are plenty of resources in Russian. So I hope you will continue with me on this journey to making peace with your inner mammal, clearing those obstacles to happiness so you can lead the way and help everyone, especially yourself, to blaze new trails through your jungle of neurons to turn on those happy brain chemicals and feel good about your next step and the

So far we've transformed and helped over 120 companies to create a positive impact in over 90 countries. Our reach is expanding. And recently, we were honored by the United Nations and asked to spearhead their resilience frontiers initiative using lifelong learning practices at COP26.

We're also helping to strategize for COP27 in Egypt. Replenish Earth is pioneering ways to increase end-to-end sustainable development by supporting businesses to reduce their climate risk, improve their business models to become more eco-aligned, and support governments to invest in green alternatives.

Today, I'm going to share some interesting factors affecting our wellbeing and how you can take the chance to enhance the experience of your life. Around 80 years ago, embryologist, Conrad Waddington observed that the genetic code contains items that aren't always expressed. This difference in gene and trait or genotype and phenotype have given rise to what is now one of the fastest-growing areas of science, which has the potential to reshape our understanding of wellbeing.

The early stages of the field began with scientific debates about the nature of how organisms develop and how different mechanisms dictate genetic inheritance. Its early definition was a broad explanation for scientific phenomena, which couldn't really be explained by genetics. As the decades went by, scientific and technological developments allowed researchers to understand DNA methylation with the involvement of RNA and create new technologies, which all contributed to the gene expression and its various influences.

Today, I'm going to share some interesting factors affecting our well-being and how you can take the chance to enhance the experience of your life. Around 80 years ago, embryologist Conrad Waddington observed that the genetic code contains items that aren't always expressed. This difference in gene and trait or genotype and phenotype have given rise to what is now one of the fastest growing areas of science, which has the potential to reshape our understanding of well-being. The early stages of the field began with scientific debates about the nature of how organisms develop and how different mechanisms dictate genetic inheritance. Its early definition was a broad explanation for scientific phenomena, which couldn't really be explained by genetics. As the decades went by, scientific and technological developments allowed researchers to understand DNA methylation with the involvement of RNA and create new technologies which all contributed to the gene expression and its various influences. Although the true definition of epigenetics still remains highly debated, it's kind of like sustainability. People are sort of evolving with it. The concept is still linked to the observations that were initially made by Waddington in 1939. So it's the study of heritable changes in gene expression that do not originate from changes in the DNA sequence. And this is really important. That's the paradigm shift that epigenetics has triggered within the scientific world and that we can have even greater consequence on the environment with. So originally, when epigenetics was being studied, monozygotic or identical twins were becoming the face of epigenetic studies because you can only imagine two people that are born with the same genetic code could look absolutely different. They would be distinct with juxtaposing personalities and face different diseases. Studies have shown that despite identical twins being born with exactly the same genome, in theory, the environment included epigenetic additions to their code, would increase throughout their life as a result of varying lifestyles, surroundings, emotional, social, mental surroundings. So, you know, did you know, if a twin suffers from bipolar disorder or schizophrenia, the other twin's risk of contracting the same illness increases by 50 percent. You know, so whilst this statistic has significant weight, if the twins have the same DNA sequence, one wouldn't expect the likelihood of getting the same illness to vary by 50 percent, right? Scientists have attributed this difference to epigenetics. And since one twin's epigenome can vary significantly from the other's, you know, we can really try to understand how this works. So the term epi is derived from a Greek prefix, which means to hover over or to cover, kind of like a covering of an item. So you can imagine that whatever your gene is, the expression is how it is expressed, right? So epigenetic modifications happen when an extra layer of instruction, let's say, covers the DNA, altering the way that it adapts. A common, you know, a common sort of type is the DNA methylation, whereby a chemical group is attracted to the DNA and typically it blocks the gene from being read or expressed. Histone modification is another mechanism where the gene's readability depends on chemical groups which can be added or removed. Imagine. So this changes how a gene is wrapped around the histone. And as a result, that's the expression that is changed. These mechanisms are caused by our lifestyle. You know, as I mentioned earlier, what makes epigenetics so revolutionary is the notion that gene expression is affected by factors which don't stem from the gene itself. You know, that the environment surrounding us has the role in the way our basic code is expressed, affecting our behaviors, our physical, mental health, relationships, maybe even our productivity at work. You know, the food that we eat, the environment pollutants that surrounded us when we were children in our neighborhoods, you know, our working hours to the way that it can change our mood. The genotype and environment interplay. And that's how they influence our brain's architecture and functioning. These external influences can affect our internal response. So if we harbor an environment and a society that supports our needs, you know, could epigenetics modify our genome to one that can improve our overall well-being? I mean, that's the trillion dollar question, right? If you could change your environment and conceptualize a spectrum of positive expressions, you could change your comfort level or happiness level or state of well-being. One such study analyzed how methylation affects well-being and found specific methylation sites which were linked to well-being. You know, other studies look at the effects of specific exercises or regular meditation, yoga on gene expression. Meditation was found to be linked to an expression pathway which influences the likelihood to suffer from depression, inflammation, or even cell aging. Can you believe it? You know, you could change the way, the way that you affect your telomeres, how old you are, and how you age. The kind of potential that we're looking at for epigenetics is non-exhaustive and can be applied to countless fields. We're really just at the beginning of our study, even though, you know, in the past two years, many of us have been isolating from those we love and care about because of the pandemic. And luckily, we still had technology to build connections, but some of us really suffered with our mental health more than others. You know, I think we can all agree that our environmental, you know, structure, design can affect how we develop characteristically. And more than 42% of the people in a U.S. Census Bureau survey said that they felt symptoms of anxiety or depression. And this is an increase of about 11% from previous years. According to researchers, social anxiety is caused by two main areas. And guess what? The environment is one of those. The other is genetics. Reconnecting with nature can really help us cognitively and also emotionally to balance our mental health. Medicatrix naturae, I think, is a really fascinating way that we can translate the way that we understand our environment. And really, when we observe our healing power of nature, which was introduced by Hippocrates to explain the body's ability to heal itself, we can also appreciate biologists like Sir John Arthur Thompson also agrees that the concepts of of nature can influence our well-being. You know, in the 1970s, maybe this wasn't as tested. And I really do think that, you know, Ulrich, when he was looking at this study of ecotherapy, you know, was pioneering research that showed changes in surgery recovery times were linked to a patient's window view. So you could be looking outside of the window. And if you were to see nature, trees, they happened, the patients happened to recover faster than they did if they were looking at an urban concrete wall. So at Replenish Earth, we believe in immersing ourselves in nature and as much as possible incorporating nature into the design of buildings. We really do believe that it can rejuvenate us. Psychologists have also prescribed nature as this kind of medicine for those suffering from stress and anxiety. Nature immersives can help reduce social anxiety. And the study of epigenetics helps us to understand what conditions are necessary to keep our environmental genetic relationship in equilibrium. So let's experiment. Take a second to reflect on how your body temperature is feeling right now. Indoor environments are often designed to create a desire for optimum well-being among occupants. Indoor well-being is the psychophysical sense of satisfaction in one's physical and thermal environments. And thermal comfort is often one of the main goals when constructing a building. I found how important this is whilst doing my PhD at UCL at the Bartlett Faculty of the Built Environment. And Fang's research really did start to analyze how we can, you know, create this kind of almost like physical environment for testing how comfort can impact our productivity and our relationship with our thermal environment and how it can affect our biology. His curiosity specifically looked at unhealthy shocks that can affect us when we're kind of transitioning from the outdoors to the indoors and how it is that we can adapt to this form of comfort. Of course, the adaptive thermal comfort theory suggests that occupants of a building have a thermal history. So you imagine if there is a particular place that you feel comfortable in, you know, this means that this place will continue to remain comfortable to you. And that's the subjective well-being factor that we have when we are analyzing our adaptive response to the built environment. You know, Nicole and a lot of the work that Humphreys have done, for example,

Manas Mandal on Beyond Pandemic: (Re)connecting Happiness

Millions of people are now suffering in this world, under the pain and difficulties of this pandemic. The last couple of years we have been suffering from this, and probably someday it will go as well, but the scar will remain for a longer period unless we do not play by the rules. That is unless we know that, what really happens if we do not follow certain practices.

In this talk I'll try to tell you in nutshell, without going into the jargon of clinical psychologies, how to live in a situation beyond pandemic and how to reconnect happiness, which is the focal theme of this festival, congress, symposium, seminar, all put into one bracket, we call World Happiness Foundation. Every year we celebrate it.

In the pandemic, two major changes have come up. One change has come up in the area of lifestyle and the other change that we are noticing is in the coping style. Let me tell you what do I mean by that.

Lifestyle is something, the way we live our life. While I talk about coping style, the way we develop a strategy to accommodate stress within and outside, both consciously and unconsciously. As human beings we have been doing it for quite some time, coping with the environment, the stress we get, come back to our safe point, and once again we get it. It's a dynamic process.

Saamdu Chetri on Self-Development from an Eastern Perspective

Aristotle said, "Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom." Remember, what we do each day repeatedly builds into a self-developed habit. Further, I try to find the righteous path to walk on it and learn every day to live in compassion but thus said, your thoughts and your mind are the temple and compassion is your worship.

When I wake up, I first sit leaning on the bedpost with my eyes closed. I try to reflect yesterday and think about how I could better today and design on an incremental practice towards my growth. Thereafter, I put a resolve for the day and begin my meditation of 18 to 36 minutes. I make a multiple of nine. I find nine times is very powerful and a mystical number aligned to existence. After that, I lie back in the bed and stretch myself as much as possible. I then raise my upper back lightly, lift my hands parallel to my legs, and begin my cycle kicks. I do it 108 times. Then I swing over my legs to the ground and thank mother earth for allowing me to walk on her again that day. I thank all elements, people, and things that enable me to be who I am. I cry sometimes for the destitutes and hungry people and send my loving prayers, the least that I can do sitting far away from them.

Then my days start with self-affirmation. I keep them around, such as in front of the mirror and in places I spend most of my time. I also have vision and mission statements displayed in strategic locations where I spend my time. I make sure to listen to uplifting music as I work and read inspirational books. As I do my morning exercise, I listen to the great teachings from various gurus. I try mindfulness from waking to the sleeping movement.

Philip Kotler and Christian Sarkar on Happiness, Hope and Human Rights.

Philip Kotler and Christian Sarkar talk about Happiness, Hope, and Human Rights as part of the World Happiness Fest.

----

“…Brand Activism will be required reading, not only in business schools and by NGOs and campaigners, but by asset managers, owners, pension funds’ trustees and senior corporate executives worldwide.”
– Hazel Henderson, founder, Ethical Markets

“Kotler and Sarkar convincingly make the case as to why values-driven marketing requires taking the right actions too. Timely, progressive and ground-breaking, their how-to brand activism framework should be the go-to guide for marketers wanting to make a bigger difference with their brands.” – Kevin Lane Keller, E.B. Osborn Professor of Marketing, Tuck School of Business, Dartmouth

“Phil (and his colleague Sarkar) is at it again, continuing to up his game. This time he is aiming at helping society and the world in which we live. Corporate and governmental trust is at a crisis. This book is an essential roadmap of steps businesses and their leaders must partake.” – David Reibstein, William Stewart Woodside Professor Professor of Marketing, The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania

Does business have an obligation to step up when government isn't doing its job?

What happens when businesses and their customers don’t share the same values? Or, for that matter, when employees of a company don’t share the same values as their executives? Welcome to the world of Brand Activism.

Companies no longer have a choice. If the gap between a business and its values and its customers or society and his other stakeholders is too large, business will inevitably suffer.

What can be done?

How do brands align their values with the values of their customers, their employees, and society at large? What is needed, now more than ever, is a mindset that views reality from the outside in.

Brand Activism consists of business efforts to promote, impede, or direct social, political, economic, and/or environmental reform or stasis with the desire to promote or impede improvements in society.

This brand activism is a natural evolution beyond the values-driven Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) programs that are, frankly, too slow.

Brand activism is driven by a fundamental concern for the biggest and most urgent problems facing society.

It gives life to what it means to be a “values-driven” company. You can’t be a values-driven company and disregard society – your employees, your customers, the communities you work in, and the world. The proof is in what you do, not what you say.

A warning: we should be clear in saying that activism doesn’t have to be progressive; it can be regressive as well.

The poster-child for regressive activism is Big Tobacco – the tobacco companies that for so many years denied the harm their products did to consumers, even when their own research revealed otherwise. They promoted the “virtues” of smoking in a way that actually hurt consumers. Companies that lobby our politicians for regressive policies are regressive brand activists.

On the progressive activism side, we see more and more companies seeking to have an impact on the biggest societal problems. These companies have a larger purpose than simple profit-seeking, and are increasingly seen as leaders in their industries.

Brand Activism: From Purpose to Action is about how progressive businesses are taking stands to create a better world.
