Visualization of Maitreya. The Buddha Of The Future

Maitreya and the Timeless Journey: A Dharamshala Reflection

Sitting at dusk in Dharamshala’s high hills, I sip butter tea while Himalayan prayer flags flutter outside my window. Wearing my PhD student hat, studying non-duality in this Tibetan Buddhist enclave, I am daily immersed in traditions that teach time itself is fluid. In the Abhidharma writings I read, time “changes from moment to moment” and is not an absolute container. Each interval is an imputed phenomenon on the mind’s continuum. In practice, this means past, present, and future are inseparable; by examining each breath, I see the seeds of all lifetimes. In a previous essay, Embracing a Timeless Perspective: The Path of Self-Inquiry, I explored how transcending linear time can heal our soul lessons. Here in the Dharma community of Dharamshala — under snow-capped peaks and beside old gompas — those themes come alive.

Maitreya: The Future Buddha of Loving-Kindness

The figure of Maitreya is woven through Buddhist lore in every tradition. He is the great Bodhisattva who will become the next Buddha of our world. Classics like the Lotus Sutra and Pali Suttas foretell his coming at a time when the Dharma has faded; indeed, the Buddha taught that Maitreya will “descend to earth to preach anew the Dharma” when Gautama’s teachings have completely decayed. This prophesied return underscores the impermanence (anicca) even of sacred teachings. Tibetan Buddhists call him Pakpa Jampa, the “Noble Loving One,” reflecting his embodiment of maitrī (Pali metta)—loving-friendliness. The very root of his name comes from Sanskrit for “friendship” or “loving-kindness”. In this way Maitreya personifies the Buddha’s metta, the altruistic love every practitioner seeks to cultivate.

All schools of Buddhism revere Maitreya: from the earliest Mahayana sutras to the Theravāda canon. He was “mentioned in scriptures from the 3rd century CE” and became the only bodhisattva generally honored by Theravada tradition. In Tibetan monasteries and pilgrimage sites (even here in the Tibetan diaspora), statues or thangkas of Maitreya remind devotees of hope. Monks and laypeople celebrate Maitreya Day on Losar (Tibetan New Year), symbolically aligning a new year with the advent of compassion. I have watched local prayer wheels inscribed not just with Om Mani Padme Hum but blessings for the “future Buddha, Maitreya,” linking everyday practice to this future promise.

Modern teachers reinforce this symbolism. Lama Zopa Rinpoche writes that “Maitreya Buddha is the embodiment of each buddha’s loving kindness, and the symbol of all the bodhisattvas’ loving kindness for all sentient beings”. In other words, Maitreya is not only an external savior but an emblem of the love and peace we cultivate here and now. Each act of compassion is a tiny way that the Buddha of the future already comes alive in us.

Impermanence and the Circular Wheel of Time

In Vajrayana and all Buddhist thought, time is cyclical and impermanent. Walking through Dharamshala’s market or monastery, I see this everywhere: the melting winter snow, the ever-changing faces of pilgrims, even the way buildings rise and crumble. As the Dhammapada teaches, “All conditioned things are impermanent” — a truth that turning our attention to impermanence can free us from clinging. This is not mere pessimism; it is healing. Recognizing change with wisdom lets us let go of past suffering and open to transformation.

Buddhism frames life itself as samsara, a vast cycle of becoming. The classical doctrine of rebirth describes how our actions carry on beyond death: “the actions of a sentient being lead to a new existence after death, in an endless cycle called samsara”. This cycle, the Buddha warned, is full of unsatisfactoriness (dukkha), and it only ends in Nirvana (liberation) when desire is extinguished. In practical terms, my hope for healing is to transform the karmic threads that tie me from one life to the next. Each lifetime is like a ring on the wheel of time, connected to the others by cause and effect. In fact, Abhidharma psychology teaches that a period of time is measured on a person’s mindstream between two events (for example, between committing a karmic act and experiencing its result). Time has “no beginning and no end,” because our mental continuum flows beyond any single life. In this light, the cycles of samsara are not abstract: they are lived in every heartbeat and choice.

Culturally, Tibetans have long conveyed this cyclical view. The Kalachakra (“wheel of time”) teachings portray cosmic ages of deterioration and renewal. Even celebrations align with cosmic cycles — for instance, the Tibetan New Year ritual Losar connects rebirth of the year with hopes for Dharma’s rebirth. Living here, I feel that each prayer wheel spin and meditation retreat is a tiny turning of the wheel of time toward awakening. Thus the prophecy that Maitreya will come “during an era of decline” reminds us that just as eras cyclically decay, they also cyclically revive. And the revival begins within each practitioner.

Non-Dual Awareness: Beyond Past and Future

Studying non-duality has taught me that the ordinary split between past/future and present is a convenience of the mind. As one Tibetan text explains, time is not an absolute background — it is relative to the observer. In other words, time is “a function of, and therefore relative to, the mind that experiences it”. This insight dissolves the ego’s grip on time. When I meditate on “the future Buddha,” I find that the image dances on the edge of awareness: Maitreya resides not ‘out there’ in a remote future, but here in the spacious clarity of the mind.

Buddhist emptiness doctrine reinforces this: there is no independent “flow” of time apart from moment-to-moment consciousness. The Tibetan non-dual tradition (Mahamudra/Dzogchen) would say that our true nature is timeless awareness itself. In that pure mind, distinctions between past and future collapse. From this perspective, the promise of Maitreya’s coming can be read as poetic: the Buddhahood we seek is unborn and already present. Each realization — each glimpse of bodhichitta — is Maitreya awakening within us. This feels especially vivid at this altitude: the blue sky seems to hold all past and future in a single point of now.

Karma and the Continuum of Lifetimes

The doctrine of karma ties these ideas together. Every intentional action leaves an imprint across the vast mental continuum. The Abhidharma notes that we can specify a temporal interval between a harmful act and the suffering it yields. These karmic sequences often play out over many lifetimes. In Buddhist lore, Maitreya himself is said to have practiced boundless compassion eons ago, patiently awaiting this cycle’s fruition. In our practice, we too accumulate wisdom and compassion seed by seed. Sometimes I imagine my own past lives: what traumas or achievements might have been carried forward? Whether these memories are literal or symbolic, they serve the same purpose — showing that time’s span is not limited to “this life.”

Scriptures say we can be reborn in any of the six realms depending on karma. Personally, I take this as a mirror: if I find myself suffering now, it may be the fruit of unskillful actions from before. Conversely, a sudden influx of insight might feel like seeds planted long ago finally blooming. Understanding karma in this way makes time a dimension of healing: we see how to respond to difficulties (as ripenings) and nurture wholesome seeds (to bloom in future). This is the integration of soul lessons across lives that my earlier article envisioned.

In Tibetan Buddhist practice here, we often chant mantras and engage in lojong (mind-training) to purify karma and cultivate wisdom. Each practice is an anchor in the present that gradually alters the entire timeline of mind. Just as a great tree might first have been a seed buried in soil, our current life is the continuation of countless past “moments.” Every act of generosity or patience has ripple effects, even into the unseen chapters of the soul’s story.

The Maitreya Within: Inner Awakening of Timeless Wisdom

Ultimately, reflecting on Maitreya has become less about waiting for a distant savior and more about recognizing a personal truth: the future Buddha is the Buddha happening now. Every loving thought and action I offer feels like a tiny manifestation of Maitreya’s compassion. When I study Vajrayana art or witness puja (worship) in the Tsuglagkhang Temple nearby, Maitreya sometimes appears side by side with Avalokiteśvara and Manjushri. This reminds me that compassion and wisdom are inseparable — the two wings of the dove that will carry the Dharma forward.

In academic terms, one might say Maitreya is an archetype of metta, or loving-kindness, that matures within the pilgrim’s heart. Lama Zopa’s words resonate: global and personal peace “comes from the good heart, loving kindness,” and Maitreya is the symbol of this universal heart. In practicums, I have chanted Om Maitre Ma — a mantra of friendship and benevolence — watching the syllables soften my agitation. Each time, I glimpse how Maitreya’s arrival is a metaphor for the blossoming of such open-hearted presence in ordinary life.

As spring returns and prayer flags anew unfurl on the hilltops, I feel I carry Maitreya’s promise with me. It is not a future unreachable by linear time, but a living impulse toward awakening. Just as a snowmelt feeds the spring, each moment of insight feeds the coming of true Dharma anew. In the great circle of samsara, there is no line dividing now from then — the healer and the healed, the questioner and the answer, are one flow.

Cultivating the Future Now

  • Impermanence: The Buddha’s words ring true every morning here: seeing that “all conditioned things are impermanent,” we learn to release our clinging. Rather than fear time’s passage, we welcome it as the path to wisdom.

  • Karma and Continuity: We embody the law of cause and effect, aware that our current struggles and joys are interwoven with past actions. This makes life a sacred continuum in which every moment can seed a better future.

  • Non-dual Wisdom: In the heart of practice, we realize that time itself is a concept — the mind’s way of organizing experience. Beyond beginnings and ends lies the timeless ground of being, the awakened nature where Maitreya already dwells.

  • Loving-Kindness: Finally, we remember that at the core of every teaching is compassion. By developing a good heart, we manifest the very future we yearn for. As Lama Zopa Rinpoche said, Maitreya symbolizes “the loving kindness for all sentient beings,” which we actualize here and now.

In the blend of scholarly insight and poetic reflection that guides my journey, I find Maitreya’s message is simple: the future of the Dharma depends on the wisdom that arises in each person today. His awaited arrival is both a vision and a mirror, showing us that the luminous wisdom of Buddha is timelessly present in every open heart. As the Tibetan mystic Padmasambhava taught, an enlightened mind is never bound by time. So as I write these words by the glow of a butter lamp, I know that the “Future Buddha” is really the present moment’s kindness, patience, and insight unfolding within me.

Your power of Manifestation by the Ocean (Hypnotic Session)

The Power of Manifestation: Harnessing the Universal Laws of Unlimited Potentialities

Manifestation is the art of bringing our deepest desires and aspirations into reality. It's a concept that transcends mere wishful thinking, tapping into the foundational principles of the universe itself. Central to this practice is the universal law of unlimited potentialities, which posits that the universe holds infinite possibilities for us all. By understanding and leveraging this law along with other relevant universal principles, individuals can unlock the true power of manifestation to shape their lives.

Understanding the Universal Law of Unlimited Potentialities

The universal law of unlimited potentialities suggests that at any moment, there are limitless paths and outcomes available to us. This law implies that the constraints we perceive are often self-imposed by our beliefs, fears, or societal conditioning. To harness this law, one must first believe in the abundance and limitless nature of the universe. Recognizing that potential is boundless opens the mind to receiving what it truly desires without the limitations of scarcity or competition.

Complementary Laws of Manifestation

Several other universal laws work in tandem with the law of unlimited potentialities to facilitate manifestation. Here are a few key principles:

The Law of Attraction: Arguably the most famous among manifestation laws, it states that like attracts like. By focusing our thoughts and energies on desired outcomes, we attract those very possibilities into our lives. It’s essential to maintain a positive and hopeful outlook, aligning our vibrations with what we seek.

The Law of Action: Manifestation isn't solely about wishful thinking or positive affirmations. It requires actionable steps towards the desired outcome. This law emphasizes that actions must align with thoughts and feelings to actualize dreams. It bridges the gap between the mental and physical realms.

The Law of Correspondence: This principle asserts that the patterns of the macrocosm are reflected in the microcosm. By understanding this correlation, individuals can influence their personal environment and experiences through their thoughts and actions, which in turn resonate with the universe’s larger patterns.

The Law of Perpetual Transmutation of Energy: This law highlights that energy is always in motion and can be transformed from one form to another. Positive energy can thus be channeled into manifesting positive outcomes, continually evolving from lower to higher vibrations.

Practical Steps for Manifestation

To effectively utilize these laws, one must adopt a proactive approach to manifestation:

Set Clear Intentions: Know exactly what you want to manifest. Clarity is crucial in harnessing the law of attraction effectively.

Maintain High Vibrations: Keep your energy and spirits high. Engage in activities that uplift your mood and keep negative thoughts at bay.

Visualize Success: Regular visualization strengthens the reality of your desires in your subconscious, aligning your mental and emotional frequencies with your goals.

Take Inspired Action: Be ready to take steps that feel right and are aligned with your goals. Action is a critical component of manifestation, as it actualizes thoughts into reality.

Practice Gratitude: Gratitude amplifies positive energy and opens you up to receive more from the universe. It acknowledges the abundance that is already present and forthcoming.

Manifest

The power of manifestation lies in understanding and aligning with the universal laws that govern reality. By recognizing the limitless potentialities available to us, and actively engaging with these principles through positive thought, visualization, and action, individuals can shape their destinies. Manifestation is not just about achieving what you desire; it's a transformative journey that reflects your inner self and your deepest values in the world around you. Through this practice, not only can one fulfill personal aspirations, but also contribute positively to the collective human experience.

Realizing a World Free of Labels (Hypnotic Session)

Embracing Diversity: The World Happiness Foundation's Vision for a World Free of Labels

In a society that often prioritizes conformity, the World Happiness Foundation is championing a revolutionary approach: creating a world free of labels, especially focusing on communities that include neurodivergent individuals and those with autism. This initiative is not just about advocating for inclusion; it's about reshaping our understanding of neurodiversity and leveraging it as a strategic element in building a world of freedom, consciousness, and happiness for everyone.

Understanding Neurodiversity and Autism

Neurodiversity is a concept that refers to the variation in the human brain regarding sociability, learning, attention, mood, and other mental functions. It is a perspective that regards individuals with differences such as Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and other neurological conditions as part of normal variations in the human population.

Autism, a prominent example of neurodivergence, is often characterized by distinct social interactions, unique strengths, and varied ways of perceiving and interacting with the world. Rather than viewing autism as a deficit, the neurodiversity movement suggests that society should embrace these neurological differences in the same way we accept other forms of diversity.

A World Free of Labels

The World Happiness Foundation believes in a "world free of labels"—a society where people are not defined by their neurological conditions but are embraced for their unique contributions and perspectives. This vision aligns with the foundation's overarching goals of enhancing freedom, raising consciousness, and increasing happiness across the globe.

Seeing the World Through Their Lenses

One of the core initiatives of the World Happiness Foundation is to encourage society to view the world through the lenses of neurodivergent individuals. This perspective shift is vital for developing more comprehensive and humane approaches to education, employment, and social integration. By understanding how neurodivergent individuals perceive and interact with their environment, society can move beyond mere accommodation and towards genuine inclusion and appreciation of diverse cognitive landscapes.

Supporting Whole Communities

Achieving this vision requires a holistic approach that supports not only neurodivergent individuals but also their families, teachers, and caregivers. These support networks play crucial roles in the lives of neurodivergent people, and empowering them with knowledge, resources, and emotional support is key to fostering an inclusive community.

Educational programs tailored to recognize and utilize the unique learning styles of neurodivergent students, workplace policies that accommodate and celebrate different cognitive abilities, and community services that provide comprehensive support are all elements of this inclusive approach. These initiatives help dismantle the traditional narratives that often marginalize neurodivergent individuals and replace them with a new paradigm that recognizes the value and potential of every person.

Toward Fundamental Peace and Human Progress

If society were to embrace the perspectives of neurodivergent individuals fully, we would not only make strides in achieving fundamental peace but also unlock new paradigms for human progress. Neurodivergent individuals often offer unique insights and innovative solutions to complex problems, driven by their distinct ways of processing information and their heightened abilities in various areas such as pattern recognition, memory, or specialized skills.

By valuing these perspectives and integrating them into the broader societal framework, the World Happiness Foundation believes we can advance towards a future where neurodiversity is not just accepted but is acknowledged as a critical component of our collective human advancement.

Conclusion

The World Happiness Foundation's commitment to supporting a world free of labels is a bold step toward redefining societal norms and values. By fostering an environment that cherishes neurodiversity, we pave the way for a society that is not only more inclusive but also richer in understanding and innovation. Through this transformative approach, we can envision a future where every individual has the freedom to thrive, contribute, and shape a world of greater consciousness and happiness.

Happytalismo. Capitulo Primero

Happytalismo.

Cuida tu red social y tu entorno.

No Barriers - Contemplating Faith and Forgiveness with Pastor and Author, Nadia Bolz-Weber

Dave brought Nadia in as a guest after he heard her speak at the Nantucket Project and was incredibly impressed with her and the parallels of her words and our No Barriers messaging.

All three hosts sat down with Nadia in our studio in Golden to talk about her own journey to become a Pastor for House for All Sinners and Saints, a congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Denver, Colorado. From her struggles with alcoholism and feeling lost in the world, Nadia found a community when she entered the world of comedy and became a stand up comedian. Using humor and her faith as therapy, she eventually began to heal and transformed her trauma into a passion for helping others.

Now, she has two best-selling books and most recently released her latest book, Shameless, an examination and take down of the "harmful and antiquated ideas about sex, gender, and our bodies."

The hosts and Nadia discuss the concepts of forgiveness, faith, trust, and spirit in this hour of reflection.

No Barriers - Channeling Pain into Positive: Speaking with Running Man, Charlie Engle

Our hosts, Jeff Evans and Erik Weihenmayer, had the opportunity to catch Charlie for an hour during his extremely busy schedule. Charlie was in the midst of training to head off on his latest pursuit: to run from the lowest point on earth; the Dead Sea to the tallest; the summit of Mt. Everest. Jeff and Erik wanted to hear more about not only his athletic accomplishments (too many for one podcast!) but to hear about how he got to this place of focus in his life.

Charlie Engle is many things: a writer, runner, recovering addict and speaker. He’s run across the Sahara Desert, the Amazon, swum with crocodiles and summited ice covered volcanoes, but according to Charlie his greatest challenge has been becoming sober. He has stayed clean since 1992 and has channeled his addictive nature into his passion to run and what he calls “positive, purpose-driven pursuits.”

He discusses the mental clarity and resolve it takes to run such long distances and not avoid pain but to tap into it. He also talks about the sheer logistics and planning that go into endeavors like the ones he takes on and the folks in his life who help make it all possible - like his wife who works tirelessly on logistics behind the scenes.

In 2016, he wrote a memoir titled, “The Running Man” to illuminate the lessons he’s learned in his struggles and his triumphs.

No Barriers - Harnessing Positivity with Jim Kwok

This much is true... no one gets outta here alive.

If you had the option of knowing the day you would die and how it would happen, would you want to know?

This is Jim.

Jim was very much alive when this episode was recorded.

Jim was dead 2 months later..

Jim has a Stage 4, terminal cancer diagnosis and has ceased all treatment. Two weeks before this episode was recorded he was told he had roughly a month to live.

Since his diagnosis, Jim has endured countless rounds of chemo, multiple surgeries and a brief ‘remission’.  He has accepted his fate and has made it his mission to squeeze as much life out of the short time he has left. And along with that, has committed himself to encouraging people to wake the hell up with regards to valuing this one precious life that we each have. To not forget how fleeting and finite it all is. To love those around you and live the best version of your life.

We’re grateful to him for that critical reminder that our walk on this planet is brief and that every minute counts. It’s easy to get caught up in the circus that surrounds us. Instead, let’s step outside, breathe, hug, share, appreciate, love. --- Jeff Evans, No Barriers Podcast Host.

Executive Director & Professor Lobsang Tenzin Negi on the Central Tenants and Urgency of Compassion

In this special exchange, Pooja and Professor Negi discuss the central tenants and urgency of compassion, a focus of His Holiness, the Dalai Lama. Dr. Negi expands on how although humans have made tremendous progress from an outward, material standpoint, we have neglected to develop the core inner values that lead to contentment and inner peace. In other words, we have been focused on educating the mind, while forgetting to educate the heart.

Dr. Negi shares how compassion is linked to the idea of safety and security in a world with so much diverse thought, biases, and differing groups of people. It is in this kind of world, especially, that people need to feel safe. He shares that at the heart of compassion is a sense of meaningful, tender connection with each other, and that creates a sense of security and trust, happiness and love.

Pooja and Dr. Negi also uncover the links between traditional Tibetan Buddhist mind training practices called "Lojong", which systematically look within, closely observing what triggers our emotions. This scientific examination parallels some of the main practices and strategies used in CBT, originating in the 1960's by Dr. Aaron Beck, globally recognized as the father of Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) and one of the world’s leading researchers in psychopathology.

--

LOBSANG TENZIN NEGI, Ph.D. is the co-founder and Executive Director of the Center for Contemplative Science and Compassion-Based Ethics at Emory University, formerly the Emory-Tibet Partnership. Prof. Negi is also a Professor of Pedagogy in Emory University’s Department of Religion and the founder and spiritual director of Drepung Loseling Monastery, Inc., in Atlanta, GA.

Over the past two decades, Prof. Negi has been a pioneer of compassion training programs for adults and children and he has contributed to the development and burgeoning of compassion science through his research initiatives and collaborations.

Through his center, Prof. Negi has developed and now oversees three programs, which are dedicated to expanding compassion and engaging in research. In 2004, Prof. Negi developed CBCT® (Cognitively-Based Compassion Training), a secularized contemplative program based on Tibetan Buddhist mind training practices that deliberately and systematically works to cultivate compassion. He also oversees SEE Learning™ (Social, Emotional and Ethical Learning), a program that develops and implements curricula for kindergarten through university level education for the education of heart and mind. The third program of the center is the Emory-Tibet Science Initiative, a program he developed, at the invitation of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, to develop and implement a comprehensive modern science curriculum specifically for Tibetan monastics.

Prof. Negi was born in Kinnaur, a remote Himalayan region adjoining Tibet. A former monk of 27 years, he began his monastic training at The Institute of Buddhist Dialectics in Dharamasala, India and continued his education at Drepung Loseling Monastery in south India, where in 1994 he received the Geshe Lharampa degree. Prof. Negi completed his Ph.D. at Emory University in 1999; his interdisciplinary dissertation centered on traditional Buddhist and contemporary Western approaches to emotions and their impact on wellness. His current research focuses on the complementarity of modern science and contemplative practice.

Professor Andrew Harman on a Calm Mind, Buddhism and Science

Our guest today is Dr. Andrew harman, a Professor of Virology and Immunology at the University of Sydney School of Medicine and an ordained Buddhist who has much insight on how Buddhist practices and philosophy can help us deal with change, restlessness and uncertainty in our fast moving world.

He shares how acceptance of your reality can help bring about calm. Dr. Harman and Pooja talk extensively about how we may need to reset our definition of "happiness" – instead of desperately seeking out happiness through exciting, impermanent experiences, things, people or moments, we might instead think of happiness as a state of equanimity which is defined as mental calmness, composure, and evenness of temper. Equanimity, according to Dr Harman, comes from doing the inner work and obtaining wisdom and insight from it.

In other words, from a Buddhist standpoint, real happiness is maintaining a state of inner peace no matter what is happening in the outside world.

In this very special discussion, Dr. Harman also answers how science and Buddhism go hand in hand, why Vipassana mediation may not work for some, and how Albert Einstein may be the best role model to date in helping us see how spirituality or religion can add value along with science in helping us live with more grace, calm, rootedness, and compassion.

Bio:

Andrew Harman is a Professor of Virology and Immunology at the University of Sydney School of Medicine where he is a level 3 supervisor in the theme of Infection, Immunity and Inflammation. He is a member of the Partnerships Advisory Group and the chair of the High School Liaisons working group. He is also the Deputy Director of the Centre for Virus Research at the Westmead Institute for Medical Research.

Andrew has been working at the Westhead Health Precinct since completing his PhD at the University of Cambridge in 2002. He has extensive collaborations with surgeons at Westmead and other Western Sydney Hospitals who provide his research group with a large range of human tissues with which he conducts all his research. He leads two research groups at the Westmead Institute for Medical Research, in the Centre for Virus Research and Centre for Immunology and Allergy Research. From Plum Village. A Cloud Never Dies: The Passing of Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh

At such a demanding and delicate time, the presenters, Zen Buddhist monk Brother Phap Huu and lay Buddhist practitioner and journalist Jo Confino, reflect on Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh passing on January 22nd, 2022. They offer a profound insight into the memorial week, the funeral, impact on the Plum Village community, and the overwhelming global response.

This installment of the podcast is an intimate account of the period between the announcement of Thich Nhat Hanh’s passing and the recording of this episode: “a retreat of silence, and a retreat of remembering Thay and continuing Thay.”

Brother Phap Huu, Thay’s former attendant and current Abbot of the Upper Hamlet, shares his personal relationship with Thich Nhat Hanh and how these events have impacted him. He also shares a detailed behind-the-scenes look at the traditional ceremonies and memorial services, preparations, and processions, as well as personal stories from the Plum Village communities over the eight days following the beloved teacher’s passing.

The conversation delves into: the significance of the ceremonies’ texts; the deep practises underpinning the formalities; Thay becoming a spiritual ancestor; deep levels of aspiration; the symbolic homes for Thay’s ashes; acceptance, togetherness, and impermanence; the relevance of Thay’s teachings for years to come; and what it means to be the continuation of Thay.

The episode ends with a short meditation on continuation and gratitude, guided by Brother Phap Huu.

Saamdu Chetri on the Technology for Peace and Happiness

Understanding peace and happiness, we realize that they are an integral part of each other. When we are happy, we are in peace. Or when we are in peace, we are in happiness. We also know from quantum physics that peace is the highest vibration of our energy, which has a hertz of 600 per second vibration, and beyond 700 hertz per second vibration is enlightenment, where we can be totally free from mental or physical effect from both inner and outer environments.

We all do not wish to be enlightened but look for easier ways in life to be happy and in peace. However, there's no quick fix for achieving peace or happiness. We need to free ourselves from any kind of attachment, be it emotional or material, and, we are very much in both of them.

From Plum Village. From Extraction to Regeneration: Healing Ourselves, Healing Society with Brother Phap Linh

In this episode, the presenters, Zen Buddhist monk Brother Phap Huu and lay Buddhist practitioner and journalist Jo Confino, are joined by special guest, Zen Buddhist monk Brother Phap Linh (Brother Spirit). Together, they discuss eco-anxiety, the challenges of and solutions for shifting to a new paradigm which can heal us and our planet, and whether it’s possible to change our minds, hearts, and future. Plus: how can you be at peace in what feels like a battlefield?

The conversation touches upon “the decisive decade”; individualism and competition; interdependence; handling fear; transformation; change in “the age of collective procrastination”; and opportunities in difficult times. Is it possible to ‘sit’ with collapse?

Brother Phap Linh (Brother Spirit) shares his journey of transformation, from studying sciences at Cambridge, to numerous retreats, and eventual monastic life.

He further talks about creating transformation at both personal and collective levels; the cult of individualism; societal numbness; handling the energy of negativity; the basis of understanding reality, and what nourishes our views and beliefs; the economic conceit ‘the tragedy of the commons’; creating shared visions and aspirations; and telling new stories. And how do you change your view when you’re caught in the old paradigm?

Brother Phap Huu shares insights on how to not lose ourselves in a fast-paced environment, and looks at: fundamental questions; procrastination; individual aspirations; becoming free from attachment; striving and the importance of stopping; learning in the community; the Six Harmonies; and the joy of sharing.

There’s also important advice for those ‘burning out’ in the environmental movement.

Jo recollects Thich Nhat Hanh’s speech to the members of the UK Parliament and his thoughts on conflictual political systems. He further muses on the lasting joy of community life.

The episode ends with a short meditation on gratitude and Mother Earth, guided by Brother Phap Linh.

From Plum Village - Zen and the Art of Saving the Planet with Sister True Dedication

Welcome to episode four of The Way Out Is In: The Zen Art of Living, a podcast series mirroring Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh’s deep teachings of Buddhist philosophy: a simple yet profound methodology for dealing with our suffering, and for creating more happiness and joy in our lives.

In this episode, presenters Zen Buddhist monk Brother Phap Huu and lay Buddhist practitioner and journalist Jo Confino are joined by special guest Zen Buddhist nun Sister True Dedication (Sister Hien Nghiem). Together, they address contemporary environmental crises and Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh’s ethical framework of living, to help us reach a better future – as presented in his new book, Zen and the Art of Saving the Planet.

The three further discuss Buddhist insights into the many existential crises faced by the global community; practical ways people can become empowered; not being overwhelmed by the suffering in the world, and how to work with our emotions to take positive action.

Jo recollects interviewing Christiana Figueres, the architect of the Paris Climate Agreement, including on how the practice of mindfulness was instrumental in her achievements, and the importance of deep listening in global talks.

Brother Phap Huu explains the insight of interbeing; the practice of gratitude; and shares about walking the (sustainability) talk in Plum Village; the ‘no car days’, shifting to veganism during a 800-people retreat, and starting a happy farm to become more self-sufficient and in touch with the Earth as a community of practitioners.

Sister True Dedication talks about editing Thich Nhat Hanh’s new book, Zen and the Art of Saving the Planet; the hardest part of working on a book; Thay’s involvement in the environmental movement since the early 1970s, as a pioneer of deep ecology; the importance of joy and vitality for facing hard times; falling in love with the Earth; accessing the insight of interbeing in our daily lives, and having fulfilled present moments; finding peace and equanimity in a suffering world; practicing deep truth; taking care of our despair.

Finally, the sister ends the episode with a guided meditation.

Amanda Janoo and the Design of Policies for a Wellbeing Economy

One of my favorite examples towards a Wellbeing Economy is Wales. Because they not only developed seven wellbeing goals, but they really thought a lot about how does this translate into a different form of governance and way of working? So they have these five principles for how they want to work together. And one is taking a long-term perspective? So not just constantly thinking about the short-term crises, but really the long term goals. Focusing on prevention? So as we were saying earlier, how do we prevent the economic, or environmental, or social crises from starting in the first place? By getting the economy to do more of the heavy lifting in the first place. How do we support greater integration, breaking down silos, and supporting more collaboration. Not only across governments agencies, but with society at large. And fostering and supporting greater engagement by people.

And with these principles in mind, they realized that that needed to also translate into how they were measuring their wellbeing goals. So I love that they put a big emphasis here on effective communication. So they wanted to make sure that any indicator that was chosen could be immediately grasped the public. That they could intuitively understand why that indicator related to one of the goals or multiple goals that they have identified is important for their society.

Carl Johan Calleman on the Macro Cosmic Quantum Theory to World Happiness

Quantum theory, pretty much everyone has heard about it, at least anyone who is interested in novel thinking of all kinds, but a quantum theory in its traditional form, which is microcosmic quantum theory is now about a hundred years old. And for a long time, this was just a very fascinating subject for physicists and chemists, and people in the hard sciences. Especially, I would say that the atom model created by Niels Bohr in 1913 with the whole idea that there are such things as quantum leaps when it comes to the orbits of electrons revolving around the nucleus of an atom. That whole concept is really a little bit of a miracle. It's something that we really can't grasp from our everyday experience of how reality works. In other words, there is a shift ... Oh, sorry. There is a shift, an instantaneous shift between the energy levels of electrons that takes place under certain conditions inside the electron.

Now, since that time, since the initial pioneers worked with microcosmic quantum theory, it's broadened its appeal to people much far outside of the actual hard sciences where it was developed. And particularly in the past 20 years, there's been a lot of focus on it among people that are interested in spirituality and consciousness. And the reason is that there is, I think, a feeling that there is some kind of an underlying field to the reality that is provided by quantum theory and that that underlying field is somehow connected to human spirituality and to the divine as such.

Mo Gawdat and Dorota Stanczyk on Self-Love, Acceptance and (Re) Connection

I would say the first step to reconnect with either ourselves, or nature, or anyone, is to create a space for it, to create time for it. And that means that even if you have a conversation with someone, don't be somewhere else in your mind, because actually when you are somewhere else when your mind is preoccupied, you are not present. And you actually don't even remember that moment happening, because you wonder, right. So I believe that the first step to well-being in general, to really feeling happier, to really feeling reconnected is to cultivate and to learn to be present. And that's not as easy as it sounds because it requires to still the mind. It requires to sit down, it requires to be patient with ourselves, and it requires to listen and requires to receive and just basically to surrender to the experience.

Vandana Shiva on (Re) Connection and Healing Throughout Food

Half the people of the world are still farmers. We forget that. Every fourth in the farmer of the world is in India. These are small farmers, and they provide 80% of the food we eat. If we were to think of it, half of humanity could be happier if you could just have a better food system. We don't have to destroy the earth.

I was helping the Sri Lankans, because the Sri Lankans have decided they won't use chemicals, and they will go organic. The government had asked me, and then the organic farmers had asked me, for training, and this was happening while the ship was sinking on the coastline, in Colombo. What is the ship carrying? Nitric acid to make ammonia, a fertilizer.

There was a young girl who rang me up and said, "The sea, I am a scuba diver, the corals are dead." I said, "The damage we do to the earth and the damage to the ocean is the same damage. We got to start relating the death of the oceans and the depth of soil." That is true ecology. That's true science.

Loretta Breuning on 3 Obstacles to Happiness (and how to relieve them)

The first obstacle is waiting for permission to be happy. Many people wait for permission to be happy instead of giving themselves permission. It's easy to do this with all good intentions, you think I can't be happy until everyone else is happy. So you wait until there's some kind of signal that everyone else is happy so now it's allowed.

Well, if you do that, you will never be happy because there will always be some unhappy people, following the herd will not lead you to happiness. And in fact, no one in human history would ever have been happy if we had to wait until every single person was happy. So as much as you may feel awkward or selfish about this, you have to blaze your own trail to happiness, which starts with giving yourself permission to do that. And you can actually help others to do that by leading the way and showing them that it's possible.

You may think you don't know how to give yourself permission to be happy, but I explain that in detail in my book, The Science of Positivity: Stop Negative Thought Patterns by Changing Your Brain Chemistry. Now, let's think about the second big obstacle to happiness that many people create for themselves, and that is not getting enough sleep. Did you know that the chemicals that make us feel good are actually manufactured while we're sleeping? So if you don't get enough sleep, then when you wake up in the morning, your tank is empty and you literally can't feel happy, even when good things are happening to you. What a waste. So you need to get plenty of sleep in order to manufacture your happy brain chemicals and have a full tank so that you can just easily release them all day. And if you make sleep your top priority, then you will figure out a way to get enough sleep.

The last self-created obstacle to happiness is unrealistic expectations. Now, it's very easy to have unrealistic expectations and in fact, hard to have realistic expectations. The first reason for that is that we're always told to dream big. So you probably think that big dreams are the way to be happy, but here's the problem with that. If you imagine yourself at the bottom of a huge mountain and you need to get to the top of the mountain in your opinion, in order to be happy. Well, the fact is that your brain only releases dopamine, that good feeling of joy and excitement when you see yourself approaching a reward. So you have to actually see yourself getting closer in order to feel good. Now, if you are always focusing on a goal, but so far away, and you don't see yourself getting closer, then you're just not going to release the dopamine.

Tia Kansara on The Epigenetics of Wellbeing

Hi everyone. I'm Dr. Tia Kansara, founder of Replenish Earth Limited and board member of the World Happiness Foundation. Super happy to be here with you. We're excited to bring a special program together for you to enjoy. I'm super excited to be meeting all of you albeit digitally and always happy to receive your comments and your questions, any suggestions that you may have. You can also add me all on Instagram.

And if you hashtag epigenetics in our communication, I'll know where you came across me for context. So Replenish Earth is a leading consultancy helping companies to drive the net positive gender. So far we've transformed and helped over 120 companies to create a positive impact in over 90 countries. Our reach is expanding. And recently, we were honored by the United Nations and asked to spearhead their resilience frontiers initiative using lifelong learning practices at COP26.

We're also helping to strategize for COP27 in Egypt. Replenish Earth is pioneering ways to increase end-to-end sustainable development by supporting businesses to reduce their climate risk, improve their business models to become more eco-aligned, and support governments to invest in green alternatives.

Today, I'm going to share some interesting factors affecting our wellbeing and how you can take the chance to enhance the experience of your life. Around 80 years ago, embryologist, Conrad Waddington observed that the genetic code contains items that aren't always expressed. This difference in gene and trait or genotype and phenotype have given rise to what is now one of the fastest-growing areas of science, which has the potential to reshape our understanding of wellbeing.

The early stages of the field began with scientific debates about the nature of how organisms develop and how different mechanisms dictate genetic inheritance. Its early definition was a broad explanation for scientific phenomena, which couldn't really be explained by genetics. As the decades went by, scientific and technological developments allowed researchers to understand DNA methylation with the involvement of RNA and create new technologies, which all contributed to the gene expression and its various influences.

Manas Mandal on Beyond Pandemic: (Re)connecting Happiness

Millions of people are now suffering in this world, under the pain and difficulties of this pandemic. The last couple of years we have been suffering from this, and probably someday it will go as well, but the scar will remain for a longer period unless we do not play by the rules. That is unless we know that, what really happens if we do not follow certain practices.

In this talk I'll try to tell you in nutshell, without going into the jargon of clinical psychologies, how to live in a situation beyond pandemic and how to reconnect happiness, which is the focal theme of this festival, congress, symposium, seminar, all put into one bracket, we call World Happiness Foundation. Every year we celebrate it.

In the pandemic, two major changes have come up. One change has come up in the area of lifestyle and the other change that we are noticing is in the coping style. Let me tell you what do I mean by that.

Lifestyle is something, the way we live our life. While I talk about coping style, the way we develop a strategy to accommodate stress within and outside, both consciously and unconsciously. As human beings we have been doing it for quite some time, coping with the environment, the stress we get, come back to our safe point, and once again we get it. It's a dynamic process.

Saamdu Chetri on Self-Development from an Eastern Perspective

Aristotle said, "Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom." Remember, what we do each day repeatedly builds into a self-developed habit. Further, I try to find the righteous path to walk on it and learn every day to live in compassion but thus said, your thoughts and your mind are the temple and compassion is your worship.

When I wake up, I first sit leaning on the bedpost with my eyes closed. I try to reflect yesterday and think about how I could better today and design on an incremental practice towards my growth. Thereafter, I put a resolve for the day and begin my meditation of 18 to 36 minutes. I make a multiple of nine. I find nine times is very powerful and a mystical number aligned to existence. After that, I lie back in the bed and stretch myself as much as possible. I then raise my upper back lightly, lift my hands parallel to my legs, and begin my cycle kicks. I do it 108 times. Then I swing over my legs to the ground and thank mother earth for allowing me to walk on her again that day. I thank all elements, people, and things that enable me to be who I am. I cry sometimes for the destitutes and hungry people and send my loving prayers, the least that I can do sitting far away from them.

Then my days start with self-affirmation. I keep them around, such as in front of the mirror and in places I spend most of my time. I also have vision and mission statements displayed in strategic locations where I spend my time. I make sure to listen to uplifting music as I work and read inspirational books. As I do my morning exercise, I listen to the great teachings from various gurus. I try mindfulness from waking to the sleeping movement.

Philip Kotler and Christian Sarkar on Happiness, Hope and Human Rights.

Philip Kotler and Christian Sarkar talk about Happiness, Hope, and Human Rights as part of the World Happiness Fest.

----

“…Brand Activism will be required reading, not only in business schools and by NGOs and campaigners, but by asset managers, owners, pension funds’ trustees and senior corporate executives worldwide.”
– Hazel Henderson, founder, Ethical Markets

“Kotler and Sarkar convincingly make the case as to why values-driven marketing requires taking the right actions too. Timely, progressive and ground-breaking, their how-to brand activism framework should be the go-to guide for marketers wanting to make a bigger difference with their brands.” – Kevin Lane Keller, E.B. Osborn Professor of Marketing, Tuck School of Business, Dartmouth

“Phil (and his colleague Sarkar) is at it again, continuing to up his game. This time he is aiming at helping society and the world in which we live. Corporate and governmental trust is at a crisis. This book is an essential roadmap of steps businesses and their leaders must partake.” – David Reibstein, William Stewart Woodside Professor Professor of Marketing, The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania

Does business have an obligation to step up when government isn't doing its job?

What happens when businesses and their customers don’t share the same values? Or, for that matter, when employees of a company don’t share the same values as their executives? Welcome to the world of Brand Activism.

Companies no longer have a choice. If the gap between a business and its values and its customers or society and his other stakeholders is too large, business will inevitably suffer.

What can be done?

How do brands align their values with the values of their customers, their employees, and society at large? What is needed, now more than ever, is a mindset that views reality from the outside in.

Brand Activism consists of business efforts to promote, impede, or direct social, political, economic, and/or environmental reform or stasis with the desire to promote or impede improvements in society.

This brand activism is a natural evolution beyond the values-driven Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) programs that are, frankly, too slow.

Brand activism is driven by a fundamental concern for the biggest and most urgent problems facing society.

It gives life to what it means to be a “values-driven” company. You can’t be a values-driven company and disregard society – your employees, your customers, the communities you work in, and the world. The proof is in what you do, not what you say.

A warning: we should be clear in saying that activism doesn’t have to be progressive; it can be regressive as well.

The poster-child for regressive activism is Big Tobacco – the tobacco companies that for so many years denied the harm their products did to consumers, even when their own research revealed otherwise. They promoted the “virtues” of smoking in a way that actually hurt consumers. Companies that lobby our politicians for regressive policies are regressive brand activists.

On the progressive activism side, we see more and more companies seeking to have an impact on the biggest societal problems. These companies have a larger purpose than simple profit-seeking, and are increasingly seen as leaders in their industries.

Brand Activism: From Purpose to Action is about how progressive businesses are taking stands to create a better world.
