There is a moment every diver knows and almost no training names: the mind is already ten metres down while the body is still on deck. Or the reverse: the body is at twenty metres and the mind is still on Monday. Today, at Planeta Azul in the Cabo de Palos Marine Reserve, we gave one hour to that gap. It was Spain's first Mindful Diving™ workshop, and the first thing we did was not talk. It was arrive.
This is the complete presentation, with the thirty-one slides that carried the hour and the two tracks from El Océano Interior that ran through it. It is here for those who came and want to walk it again, and for those who could not come and who dive, teach, or run a centre.
Sixty seconds before we begin
Mindful Diving™ always begins the same way, in a room or on a dive platform: ARRIVE, sixty seconds in six words. Acknowledge your state, unimproved. Release jaw, shoulders, hands. Read the surroundings. Intention: one checkable behaviour for today. Verify with the person beside you. Enter with the plan, not ahead of it. It is not a breathing exercise and it replaces nothing: your briefing and your plan run exactly as always. ARRIVE only helps you reach them present.
What mindfulness is, and why it matters to a diver
Jon Kabat-Zinn defined it in 1994 as paying attention in a particular way: on purpose, in the present moment, and non-judgementally. Shapiro and colleagues broke it into three components: intention, attention and attitude. Translated into the water: be where your body is. At ten metres, with this buddy, in this breath. Not the next one, not yesterday's.
And it matters to a diver for very concrete reasons. Attention to the breath lengthens and settles it, and a long exhale is fewer litres per minute. Fine buoyancy is fine attention: you notice the change before you correct it. The situational awareness you already practise — self, gas, buddy, route, environment — works better without tunnel vision: narrow, then wide, narrow, then wide. Fear stops being the problem once it has company: fear is information; panic is fear unaccompanied. And the encounter with marine life — the turtle, the fan mussel, the grouper of Cabo de Palos — changes when you are truly there rather than merely passing through.
What the ocean trains, underneath it all, is what our research calls Fundamental Peace: an integrated capacity to stay regulated as conditions change. The sea is, precisely, conditions that change.
The 4B method in one hour
Before · Below · Between · Beyond. Four moments of a dive, four forms of presence. In the hour we walked the essential practices of each:
- Before. ARRIVE. The Readiness Scan: forty seconds, four fields (body, mind, skill, context) and a colour. Green, proceed. Amber, say it aloud and adjust. Red, a clean limit, thanked and never argued. And the Buddy Agreement: five sentences two divers complete together before entry, both ways. Most buddy checks confirm the equipment; very few confirm the people.
- The Amber Word. A hand signal (flat hand tilted side to side, then the OK question) for the thing almost nobody says on the boat: "I am not in trouble, and I am not fine. Slow down, stay close, check me again in a minute." Agreed on the surface, given early, never a replacement for an agency signal: it adds to them.
- Below. The Open Protocol, four steps for any dive, any agency, any level: dedicate the descent; three exhales once neutral; one still minute at a stable, approved, optional point; gratitude at the safety stop. The Five-Channel Scan. And STILL, when fear rises.
- Between. FFLN, the four-minute debrief: facts, feelings, learned, next. Facts before feelings; the person separate from the behaviour; a pen in hand at the end.
- Beyond. The Vow, offered at certification and never demanded.
All optional, all free, all complementary. Mindful Diving™ is not a diving agency and not another level. As we like to say: all agencies teach divers what to do underwater; we are creating a way to teach them how to be there.
Two tracks, two pauses
The hour held two listening pauses with the album El Océano Interior, recorded with Nine Paths to One. The first, "La respiración compartida", is a practice for two: sit with the day's buddy and breathe the five agreements into the body. The second, "El océano interior", is the flagship meditation: a Fundamental Peace meditation in seven movements, from arrival to the ascent with gratitude. Heard simply, they are beautiful. Heard as a diver, they are training. Both are in the presentation and on every platform, with one rule that never changes: on land or on deck only, never during a dive, never with breath-holding.
Today at 13:00, in the water
After the hour, the practice: Spain's first mindful dive. ARRIVE on deck, the scan said aloud, the buddy agreement; Planeta Azul's briefing, intact; in the water, the Open Protocol with one still minute; on the surface, FFLN on the boat. Three rules: breathe naturally and continuously, never holding; everything optional and withdrawn the instant the dive demands it; and anyone may end the dive, at any time, without giving a reason — and is thanked for it.
What comes next
Planeta Azul is the first Mindful Diving™ Participating Center in Spain, and from 6 to 9 November it hosts the first two experiences: "Diving into Presence", one day with two dives that counts toward MD-1 (€199), and the three-day PRO training, MD-1 to MD-3, with eight dives (€777). Bookings at planeta@planeta-azul.com or +34 968 56 45 32.
Thank you to Amelia and Fernando, and to the whole Planeta Azul team, for opening the water to this way of being in it. Presence runs deep.
