Why I teach transpersonal coaching — and what our training will ask of you
By Luis Miguel Gallardo — Founder & President, World Happiness Foundation; Lead Instructor, Transpersonal Coaching Program, World Happiness Academy
Every coach I know has met the same moment. A client arrives with a clear goal — the promotion, the launch, the difficult conversation — and somewhere around the third session, the real subject surfaces. It was never the promotion. It was the question of who they are becoming. Whether their life means what they hoped it would mean. What to do with a grief, a longing, or a quiet sense of dissonance that no action plan touches.
At that moment, conventional coaching runs out of road. Not because it is bad coaching, but because it was never designed for that terrain. The coach either retreats to the safety of the stated goal, or improvises in territory they were never trained to hold. Neither serves the client.
Transpersonal coaching exists for exactly this moment.
What “transpersonal” actually means
The word gets used loosely, so let me be precise. Transpersonal means beyond the personal self — beyond roles, goals, and self-image. Transpersonal coaching works with the whole person: the behaviour and the habits, yes, and also the meaning, the values, the identity underneath the goal, and the sense of something larger that most clients are quietly negotiating even when they arrive talking about quarterly plans.
And it is still coaching. The client leads. The coach does not diagnose, does not treat, and does not recruit anyone into a belief system — the client’s own frame is the one that is used. What changes is what the conversation is allowed to include, and how much of it happens below the level of goals.
To be equally clear about what it is not: transpersonal coaching is not therapy, and it is not spiritual instruction. A client who simply wants a plan for the next quarter does not need the transpersonal frame — and saying so, honestly, is part of the ethics of this work.
You cannot hold a space you have never entered
Here is the conviction at the heart of how we teach: the coach’s primary instrument is the coach. Technique matters, competencies matter, practice hours matter — and none of them substitute for the coach having done their own inner work. A coach who has never faced their own shadow will flinch when the client’s appears. A coach who has walked from wound toward essence, with supervision, can stay present while someone else does the same.
This is why our training turns the lens on you. Not as an indulgence, but as the professional preparation the work demands. In my own practice and research I return again and again to one truth: “Fundamental Peace is not the absence of pain… it is the transmutation of its energy into love and compassion.” Coaching at this depth is where that transmutation becomes a craft.
What the training involves
The Transpersonal Coaching Program is the Level 1 path of the World Happiness Academy. It runs sixteen weeks and is built on the components we believe any credible training must include — because a course that skips them is selling a certificate rather than a competence.
- Weekly live sessions in two languages. Every cohort, including the self-paced route, meets live every week: Tuesdays at 11:00 EST in English, Wednesdays at 19:00 Madrid time in Spanish. Theory can be self-paced; practice needs a room with people in it.
- Observed practice, not only content. Coaching is learned by coaching while someone watches and tells you the truth. Triads, recorded sessions, and honest feedback are the actual curriculum.
- A competency framework you can check. The work maps to published, observable coaching competencies — you can see the map, not just take our word for it.
- Supervision and your own inner work. Ongoing supervision protects your clients and protects you. The reflective work is not optional garnish; it is the training.
- A practice toolkit. Students work with the instruments used throughout the program — an orientation assessment (The Compass), archetypal practice material, and the identity and wound-to-essence frameworks behind the curriculum.
- A verifiable credential. You finish with a certificate a client or employer can independently check.
What we will not promise you
Working with meaning and identity increases both the value and the risk of a conversation, so our limits are explicit. This program will not make you a therapist, and it is not a substitute for clinical training. You will finish knowing exactly where coaching ends, when to refer, and how to say it well. We will not promise you a client base, a timeline for awakening, or a guaranteed transformation — anyone who does is telling you something about their marketing, not their method. What we can offer is competence, supervised practice, and a discipline you can stand on.
And if this is not the right training for you right now, we will tell you so. We write, and we teach, from abundance — never urgency.
Who this is for
The program serves coaches who keep meeting the limits of goal-only conversations; therapists and helping professionals who want a coaching stance alongside their clinical one; leaders and HR professionals responsible for other people’s wellbeing; educators, facilitators, and health practitioners adding a coaching skill set; and people in a genuine transition who want to train — and be changed by the training.
Why this matters
The World Happiness Foundation works toward one horizon: ten billion free, conscious, and happy human beings by 2050. That future will not arrive through policy and technology alone. It is built one honest conversation at a time — conversations in which a person is met not just as a bundle of goals, but as a whole human being reaching toward meaning. Training people to hold that conversation well, with skill and with humility, is some of the most leveraged work I know.
If you have felt the limits of the conversations you are currently able to hold, this may be your next step.
