The United States — GDP per capita $85,000, the world's largest economy — scores 72/100 on the Global Pain and Trauma Map composite, higher than the global average of 65. By the GPTM's measure, the richest country in history carries more total suffering than most of the world. The paradox the World Happiness Report cannot see

Every year the World Happiness Report ranks the United States around 15th–25th, with a Cantril ladder score near 6.7 out of 10. The GPTM reveals what a single evaluative question cannot: suffering is not one thing. It has seven dimensions, and the United States scores critically high on most.

• D1 Psychological — 82: depression, anxiety, PTSD

D6: 85/100 — the highest somatic suffering score of any high-income country on Earth. The body is screaming and the metrics are not listening.

The numbers behind the hidden story

Approximately 60 million American adults experience a diagnosable mental illness in any given year. Chronic pain affects one in five adults. Overdose deaths, deaths of despair, and burnout are at generational highs. Loneliness — the D2 signal — has been declared a public health epidemic by the U.S. Surgeon General.

Who profits from invisibility

The GPTM breaks the pattern of war-zone countries where D3 and D4 dominate. In the USA the peak is D6 — a somatic scream produced by a specific configuration of extraction, militarism, inequality and disconnection. Pharmaceutical, defense, private prison, and attention-economy actors depend on this configuration continuing. Naming the system is the first act of freedom from it.

What the data prescribes

• Publish the 7-domain profile alongside every GDP report.
• Fund evidence-graded ASC modalities (mindfulness, EMDR, somatic experiencing, clinical hypnosis, psilocybin-assisted therapy) as a public-health intervention.
• Rebuild belonging (D2) through community architecture, third places and Schools of Happiness.
• Move institutional metrics from single-question satisfaction to Fundamental Peace.
