The Violence Machine — GPTM View 6

Violence costs the world $16.5 trillion every year — larger than the GDP of every country except the United States and China (Institute for Economics and Peace). D3 (Collective) and D4 (Structural) correlate with this cost at r = 0.91. The violence industry does not merely fail to reduce suffering. It actively produces it — across every GPTM domain, in every country it touches, including and especially the nation that leads it.

Violence as a 7-domain system

• D1 Psychological: PTSD in 30% of combat veterans; 22% of conflict-zone populations develop mental disorders within the first year (WHO).
• D2 Relational: 117M+ forcibly displaced globally — the highest figure in recorded history (UNHCR, 2024).
• D3 Collective: Intergenerational war trauma transmitted epigenetically; cultural erasure; genocide's multi-century shadow.
• D4 Structural: Violence containment now exceeds health + education spending in 15 nations.
• D5 Existential: The moral injury of participation; the meaninglessness of endless deployment.
• D6 Somatic: Chronic pain, TBI, addiction across veteran and displaced populations.
• D7 Environmental: Military operations are among the largest emitters and land degraders on Earth.

Follow the money

The $16.5T figure is not a cost. It is a revenue stream. Defense contractors, private prisons, private security, arms exporters and the political systems they capture are the direct beneficiaries. The GPTM's contribution is to quantify what the money does to the seven domains, not merely what it does for its shareholders.

The alternative the data makes irrefutable

Reallocating even 10% of global violence spending toward D2 (belonging) and D5 (contemplative infrastructure) would fund the population-scale interventions the GPTM prices at $20–$50 per person per year. The math is not idealistic. It is arithmetic.
