Week 03 of 36

The Master's Listening

ICF competency anchor: Listens Actively — Markers 5.1-5.7 at MCC depth · Maintains Presence — Marker 6.1 at MCC depth

90 min

This week

At Level 1, you learned to listen actively. At Level 2, you learned to listen at four levels — cognitive, somatic, relational, field. At Level 3, you learn to listen below all of them. Master listening is not skilled attention to multiple channels. It is the capacity to receive what wants to be heard before it is spoken. The PCC listens. The MCC is listened to.

Contemplative practice of the week

The Triple-Listening Practice

Twenty minutes daily. Sit. Bring to mind a recent conversation — perhaps with a client, perhaps with a loved one. Replay it in three layers. First layer: what was said. Second layer: what was felt (yours and theirs). Third layer: what was the field between you holding. Most coaches stop at layer two. The master coach receives all three simultaneously, in real-time, during the session. The practice is to develop the capacity offline so it becomes available online. After three minutes in each layer, return to the breath. The practice ends with the question: what was unspoken in that conversation that wanted to be received?

Learning objectives

  • Distinguish between PCC-level multi-channel listening and MCC-level receptive listening.
  • Practice 'listening so the client hears themselves' — the receptive posture that does the work without doing.
  • Recognize when listening becomes a quality of being (not a skill being deployed).
  • Notice the thoughts that arise during listening and let them pass without attaching.
  • Begin to receive what is unspoken in the client's speaking.

Session architecture

  • Hour 1 — From skill to ground. Lead Instructor names the categorical shift in listening. Brief teaching on the receptive posture — listening as a yin practice rather than a yang technique.
  • Hour 2 — The triple-listening practice. A 45-minute guided practice. Students sit in pairs. One speaks for 12 minutes about a current personal edge. The other listens with three explicit instructions: receive the cognitive content, receive the somatic-emotional layer, receive the field that is between you. No questions, no responses, no head-nods. Pure receiving. Switch. Then a debrief on what was different from PCC-level listening.
  • Hour 3 — Listening to silence. A teaching on the contemplative tradition of listening to silence — the Zen sesshin, the Quaker meeting, the Carthusian solitude. The MCC has practiced enough silence that they can listen for the silence underneath the client's words. The unspoken thing is often the thing that matters most.
  • Hour 4 — Master-level practicum. Each student conducts a 30-minute coaching session with a partner. The faculty observes and gives feedback specifically on the listening — was it receptive, was it skilled-but-doing, was it absent? The feedback is precise and at master depth.

Reading

  • The Transpersonal Leader — chapters on listening at master depth and the receptive posture
  • Selected reading on Zen receptive listening — Suzuki Roshi's Beginner's Mind
  • Selected reading on the Quaker tradition of listening — Thomas Kelly
  • Selected reading from Otto Scharmer's Theory U on Level 4 (presencing) listening

Lineages at work

Coaching (anchor) — listening at MCC depth · Contemplative — receptive listening (the way one listens to silence in a Zen sesshin) · Transpersonal — the listener as field

Milestone

Triple-Listening Practice integrated into daily practice. Three peer-coaching sessions completed with explicit master-level receptive listening. Faculty observation completed with feedback noted. Pattern of skilled-but-doing listening identified and named.

Reflection prompt

When do I listen receptively versus when do I listen with the intent to respond? What is the difference experientially? What did I receive in this week's sessions that I would have missed at PCC depth? What is the unspoken thing in my own life right now that wants to be received — and who can receive it?
