The Emerging Question

ICF competency anchor: Evokes Awareness — Markers 7.1-7.10 at MCC depth · Listens Actively — Marker 5.4 at MCC depth

90 min

This week

At Level 1, you learned to ask powerful questions. At Level 2, you learned to ask questions that reach beneath cognition. At Level 3, you stop asking. The master coach does not generate questions. The master coach receives them. The question that comes at MCC depth was not constructed by the coach's mind. It emerged from the silence between coach and client. The coach speaks it. But it was already there.

Contemplative practice of the week

The Emerging Question

Fifteen minutes daily. Sit. Bring to mind a question you have been carrying about your own life — a real question, not a generic one. Sit with the question without trying to answer it. Eventually a sub-question will arise — the question beneath the question. Sit with that. Eventually another sub-question may emerge. Continue until you reach what feels like the bedrock question — the question you cannot ask any deeper. Sit with that for the remaining time. The practice trains the capacity to recognize emerged questions in your own life so you can recognize them in your client's.

Learning objectives

  • Distinguish between the constructed question (from the coach's analytical mind) and the emerged question (from the silence between).
  • Practice the pause that allows the question to emerge — extending it beyond what feels comfortable.
  • Recognize the somatic signature of an emerged question (it is felt, not thought).
  • Build the discipline to wait, even when the analytical mind has a clever question ready.
  • Begin to articulate, in your own voice, what an MCC-level question feels like to ask and to receive.

Session architecture

  • Hour 1 — The categorical shift. Lead Instructor teaches the difference between the constructed question (which is fine and which is most of what coaching is) and the emerged question (which is rare and which is what mastery is). Examples from real recorded sessions of MCC coaches at work.
  • Hour 2 — The discipline of the pause. A 30-minute practice in which students sit in pairs. One speaks; the other listens for ninety seconds and then must wait for an emerged question, no matter how long it takes. Sometimes ninety seconds. Sometimes three minutes. The discipline is to not rush in with a constructed question. Switch. Debrief.
  • Hour 3 — The somatic signature. Teaching on how the emerged question feels in the body — there is a 'rightness' that is not an intellectual rightness but a felt-sense rightness. The mind often arrives slightly afterward and can either confirm or override the felt-sense. The MCC trusts the felt-sense.
  • Hour 4 — Live coaching practicum. Each student conducts a 25-minute coaching session in front of the cohort. The cohort listens for emerged questions versus constructed questions. After each session, structured feedback on the questions specifically — was that emerged? Was that constructed? What was the somatic signature?

Reading

  • The Transpersonal Leader — chapters on the emerged question and the silence between
  • Selected reading on contemplative inquiry — the Big Mind process, the koan tradition
  • Selected reading on Theory U presencing and the question that emerges from the field
  • Selected reading on the quality of the master teacher's question (Krishnamurti, Adyashanti)

Lineages at work

Coaching (anchor) — the emerged question at MCC depth · Contemplative — silence as the source of speech · NLP — language patterns at master integration · Transpersonal — the bestowal at the level of the question itself

Milestone

Recordings of three peer-coaching sessions reviewed and annotated for constructed vs. emerged questions. Pattern of question-emergence mapped. Daily Emerging Question practice integrated. The somatic signature of an emerged question articulated in personal language.

Reflection prompt

In this week's sessions, what is the ratio of constructed to emerged questions? When have I rushed in with a constructed question because I was uncomfortable with silence? What does the felt-sense of an emerged question feel like in my body? What is the bedrock question of my own life right now?
