The Supreme Yoga and the Science of Suggestion: Bridging the Yoga Vāsiṣṭha and Modern Hypnotherapy Through Consciousness, Narrative, and Neuroscience

Luis Miguel Gallardo

The Yoga Vāsiṣṭha (Mokṣopāya), among the most psychologically sophisticated works of Indian philosophy, teaches that experienced worlds are mind-made, that latent impressions (vāsanā) sustain suffering, that disciplined imagination (bhāvanā) and self-effort can dissolve them, and that liberation is available in life (jīvanmukti). Modern hypnotherapy — whose founding doctrine of suggestion entered Europe through the Goa-born Abbé Faria, whose largest early clinical corpus was produced in Bengal, and whose first theorist, James Braid, analysed reports of yogic samādhi — has independently validated the operative core of these claims across a meta-analytic evidence base. This article presents the first systematic integration of the two traditions and introduces Yoga Vāsiṣṭha Hypnotherapy (YVH), an integrative clinical model. Using a method of complementarity without collapse, we map thirteen construct concordances, align the seven jñāna-bhūmikās with graded trance depths as a heuristic clinical map, and identify the text's jīvanmukta with Fundamental Peace — an integrated regulatory capacity comprising flexible attentional control, emotional coherence, reduced self-referential rigidity and compassionate self-awareness, measurable by the FP20 scale. We state the model's disanalogies and cultural-integrity commitments, derive an eight-phase protocol, and propose five testable hypotheses, returning the science of suggestion to its deepest source while giving contemplative clinical practice a validated endpoint.

Measuring What Matters? A Critical Review of the World Happiness Report Framework (2012–2026), with Special Reference to India

Saamdu Chetri, Luis Miguel Gallardo, Satinder Singh Rekhi, Renita Sinha, Satish

Between 2012 and 2026, the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network, joined from 2024 by the Wellbeing Research Centre at the University of Oxford, published fourteen editions of the World Happiness Report (WHR), establishing subjective well-being as a serious complement to GDP-based measures of national progress. Using Gallup World Poll data and the Cantril Ladder, the WHR has ranked between roughly 137 and 158 countries in any given year and attributed cross-country variation to six factors: GDP per capita, social support, healthy life expectancy, freedom, generosity, and perceived corruption. This paper offers a critical, India-focused reading of the full run of fourteen editions published between 2012 and 2026. It synthesises the comparative gap between the highest- and lowest-ranked countries across the whole period, examines the conceptual and methodological limitations of the Cantril Ladder approach, and interrogates India's markedly non-linear trajectory: from 111th in 2012–13, down to a low of 144th in 2020, and back up to 116th in the 2026 edition. The paper argues that this trajectory reflects a genuine mix of inequality, pandemic-era disruption, weakening informal safety nets, institutional friction and a genuine recent recovery, but is also partly an artefact of a measurement instrument built around individualistic, materially weighted assumptions and of a country sample whose size has itself moved by more than twenty places over the period. The paper closes with a comparison to alternative well-being frameworks and implications for Indian policy and research.

Meditation Beneath the Surface: A Narrative Review of Underwater Mindfulness, Breath-Hold Physiology and Contemplative Tradition

Satinder Singh Rekhi, Saamdu Chetri, Luis Miguel Gallardo, Renitta Sinha

**Background.** Contemplative traditions have long associated water with stillness, concealment and renewal, and divers frequently describe underwater experience as meditative. This review asks whether immersion and submersion offer a distinctive context for mindfulness practice, and what the current evidence can and cannot support. **Methods.** A narrative review integrating epic and canonical Indian sources, the physiology of immersion and breath-hold diving, controlled and uncontrolled studies of diving-based mindfulness programmes, neuroimaging of elite freedivers, and adjacent research on flotation-REST, blue space and aquatic therapy. **Findings.** Water immersion reliably shifts autonomic balance towards parasympathetic activity, and facial submersion recruits the trigeminally mediated diving response. Scuba diving imposes slow, deliberate breathing and has been associated with reduced perceived stress and increased self-reported mindfulness in a small controlled trial (n = 67). A randomised pilot of mindfulness-integrated diving in people with PTSD (n = 34) found a significant advantage over multisport activity only for intrusion symptoms at one month, with effects gone by three months. A single-case EEG/fMRI study of a world-champion freediver found alpha-band and default-mode changes that partly overlap with meditation signatures. Flotation-REST, which removes most exteroceptive input, produces large acute reductions in state anxiety and heightens interoceptive awareness. **Conclusions.** Underwater settings plausibly amplify the attentional anchors central to mindfulness: breath, body and present-moment sensation. However, no study has compared underwater meditation with equivalent land-based practice, and hypoxic blackout poses a serious, sometimes fatal risk. We propose an optimal environment hypothesis: in still, warm, clear and shallow water, with technical demands minimised, underwater practice may deepen mindfulness beyond equivalent practice on land. It should be tested in rigorous, safety-first trials.
